Heater/AC fan doesn't work on low speeds

The heater/AC fan in my 1990 Toyota Camry does not work on the lower two of the four possible speeds. Can someone tell me where this fan is located? Is it easy to R&R? Is it more likely to be the motor or the switch? Where, other than the dealer, does one obtain the motor (or switch)? Any other advice?

Thanks
Greg

Not likely to be the fan motor. It is either the switch or the resistors for the lower speeds.

Re: Heater/AC fan doesn't work on low speeds

I just posted to the Lexus owner and will repeat so you get the email. I have a 92 Camry and just fixed this a few minutes ago.
The resistor block is by your gas pedal. It has blue, green yellow and black wires.
1 inch by 2 inches 2 screws.
It took me a while to track it down.
It a pain to get a screwdriver on unless like me you have a racheting one.
Mine just had the solder on the outside broken.
Another free fix.
If you need more info drop a message here.

Re: Heater/AC fan doesn't work on low speeds

Thanks for the replies. A cursory inspection did not reveal the resistor block. Is it above the gas pedal? Somewhere on the transmission hump? Do I need to remove any of the dash components. There are a bunch of electrical components (fuses, etc) on the left panel just forward of the driver's door. Any further information as to the location of the block would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Greg

Re: Heater/AC fan doesn't work on low speeds

Assuming that the 90 and 92 are the same, the resistors are mounted up and to the right of the gas pedal. You may have carpet or trim covering it. Mine was just about the carpet line. All you will see is the wire into a connector and the 1x2 inch plate that is screwed to the (ducting?). They are usually set inside, I guess to keep them cool. I did not need to remove anything. My 81 Celica was located in the HVAC also but sort of behind the dash area. If it is not where I describe, look for a connector and plate screwed into the HVAC unit under the dash.

Thanks for all of the help. Ultimately found block on passenger side near upper right hand corner of carpet (near heater AC duct). All of the resistors i could find were too large to fit in the space behind the block. Since the resistors become quite hot in use, i bit the bullet and bought the replacement block from toyota $69 plus tax but at least it works now.

Thanks again and to those who were able to replace just the resistors, where did you get them?

Mine was not the resistor itself but the solder on the copper connector on the outside. My Celica, I just twisted the resistor wires back together. Glad you found it. I will let the Lexus owner know where you found yours. Thanks for posting your fix.

Re: Heater/AC fan doesn't work on low speeds

My '91 Camry resistor pack was located on the passenger side, upper right side of the firewall, a few inches above the carpet. Look for a black rectangle with one screw on the left side and a six pin connector. After removing the connector, remove the screw and carefully work the pack out of the firewall. The coiled wires and solder are very brittle and are easily damaged if they hit the sides of the opening.

Here are a few pictures to help identify the pack.

After I knew what to look for I just went to the junkyard and found one that wasn't broken.

Is there a way to bypass the resistor to check the motor?

( based on 1995 schematics) Selecting high speed bypasses the resistor block. Jumper pins 4 to 5 on the blower relay socket to bypass the relay. Run a wire from the battery or pin 5 of the relay socket to the blower connector to power just the blower. Have you checked fuses? As was stated, if it won't even blow on high your resistor block is probably good. I have read of resistor blocks shorting and taking blowers with them though.
