1995 traction control problem

My 1995 Bonneville is equipped with traction control, and it seems to have an odd problem. After driving for anywhere between 2 city blocks and a mile the traction control will turn off and will not turn back on until the car is restarted. I questioned a couple of auto-parts stores and a GM dealership mechanic about it and the first thing most said is "wheel speed sensor". But one asked if my ABS light is on as well, which it is not (although it turns on briefly, as it should, at startup). He then said that it may not be the wheel speed sensor, as a problem with that is usually accompanied by an ABS warning light as well.

As I understand, this sensor is located in the front wheel hubs and typically one replaces the entire hub if it goes bad. I can get the hubs at dealer cost, saving a lot of money, but I don't want to replace them at all if that is not going to fix the problem. I also understand that some times the wire leads that come from the sensors can come loose or corroded. Where would I find these leads, and is there any way to test the sensor if I do?

This car has 186,000 miles on it, and unfortunately I have no idea what work has already been done on it (aside from the climate control getting screwed up after someone installed an after-market stereo). But it is an excellent car, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Since i bought my car my traction control has never worked, and it isnt a big deal; just have to be easy on it in the snow and rain. especially with 186k on it, i wouldnt worry too much about it, but rather just learn to live with it

If only I could just ignore it... My "old" Bonneville (1998) did not have traction control, and driving on North-Eastern Minnesota roads in a winter will certainly build up your capability to handle rain and ice. However, this is one of those things that sit in the back of my mind until it drives me crazy (I'm the kind of guy who becomes obsessed over an interior bulb being burnt out, even if it is one that is not normally used!). Before junking my old Bonne, I had considered swapping the wheel hubs, but I the wrecker actually came on time for once and I did not get a chance to try.
