Stripping chrome

How do I strip chrome on plastics? I'm working on the Revell Civic Hatch 2 in 1 and some of the engine stuff is just too much chrome for me.

Liquid plumber takes chrome off very effectively. I've used it on flat type chrome like Fujimi and Tamiya wheels etc. and it takes only about a minute to strip all the chrome. I haven't noticed any damage to plastic but it doesn't hurt to try with a test part (piece of sprue) first to avoid damaging the precious parts. Don't soak your hands in the stuff and don't use it on aluminum container, it might even eat its way through metal because there's some chemical reaction which makes the metal soak away (NaOH + metal = something...).

I use Castrol Super Clean to strip chrome from model parts. It takes a little longer than a few minutes, but CSC will not hurt your plastic parts.

With any chemical agent, be sure to wear protective gear like gloves and eye protection.

Re: Stripping chrome

I'll add to the list: Easy off oven cleaner gets rid of chrome pretty quick. A lot of people dont use it because of the fumes. As always, wear gloves, glasses, and use it outdoors.

How long should I leave the chrome parts in the CSC?

Re: Stripping chrome

I stripped chrome in CSC last night.
That's all I've ever stripped chrome with.
After about 10 minutes it's gone..

Just wash it with soap and water well after.
I scrub parts with Dawn dishwash liquid and a toothbrush, then rinse well.

Chrome stripped, part washed and repainted under 30 minutes..

And DO wear gloves or use tweezers. CSC is pretty nasty stuff on the hands.
