Re: going to 17"
I think your friend knows nothing about cars.
As long as you maintain the correct hub offset and obviously the 110-5 bolt pattern, you won't hurt anything.

The only way you can damage the car is if the tires rub the inner fender or fender lining. Rubbing only occurs if you are lowered and pick the wrong tire size or wheel offset. Just do some research and pick the correct size tires and the the right rims and you should be fine.

Re: going to 17"
first your friends an idiot and shouldnt get behind the wheel of a car. 17's arent going to damage your car by any means. I have 17 rota attack's...have had em for as long as Ive owned the car and I drive it hard all the time and I have had no issues at all. and the car has just under 30,000 miles on it. if that matters

Re: going to 17"
i have 18's on my WRX and it doesn't "hurt" the car. it slows it down a bit because of the weight. what i lost in 0-60 speed i gained in handling and with 17's you will also gain a bit better handling as well, depending on what width of rim you get and what size tires you put on there. and i thought the offset was 5x100.
