Anyone else know of people that talk like they drive like pros, and mag race?

I've been going to the tracks for years, and honestly admit that I make alot of mistakes still to this date. I have noticed though that most people on the internet act like they drive like pros even when they never go to tracks at all. The majority of the people I see at tracks don't even come remotely close to running what the magazine drivers get for their car (i.e. Camaro LS1's running mid to low 14 sec. time slips). Mind you the track is usually the factor (Track prep, heat, humidity, elevation), and most people don't believe that altitude affects cars. What experiences do you have with people like this?

The world and forum is full of people exactly like that. Not nearly enough people allow for the human factor of racing and thats perhaps the most significant factor.

Re: Anyone else know of people that talk like they drive like pros, and mag race?

Sac is supposed to have a decent track, not well prepped all the time but 0 elevation and low humidity isn't bad at all. Yet hardly anyone who is stock runs near the mag times. SRT-4s struggling to get low 14s, camaro LS1s stuggling to get 13s, WRX Imprezas running mid 15s, STIs that can't get 13s... I could go on and on.

I was really surprised at first, but after while it just gets kind of funny when people show up boasting and making claims everyone can hear. And then when it comes time to run they are nothing but excuses.

Whats the deal with all the same questions I get EVERY time I go to the track:

Is that thing supercharged?

Did it come like that stock?

How much boost are you running?

You should get an electronic boost controller, why don't you have one?

Whats that on your intake, foil wrap?

Sorry I like this thread a little too much.

What some people dont know is that most of those Mag times are cuz the mag drivers do nothing but drive...If all you do day in and day out is drive cars testing for times, your gonna be better at it than the average driver...

I dont go to tracks though...far to many rednecks.

Most mainstream magazine times are "corrected", meaning they didn't actually run that time, that's just what it would be predicted to be capable of.

That is very true. Plus often the cars received by mags are often subtly "upgraded".

Heck SCC caught mitsu doing that when they took their evo to Visnu to get it tuned and the ECU had quite a bit different firmware.

Re: Anyone else know of people that talk like they drive like pros, and mag race?

My car seems to be the opposite of that... the mags report times that are consistantly .1-.4 seconds slower than what they really run stock. Of course with me driving, I'll be lucky to get a 16.5, but that's beside the point...

Re: Anyone else know of people that talk like they drive like pros, and mag race?

It took me headers, computer adjustments through hypertech programmer, and a cat-back to run what I was "supposed to" for a stock Ext cab S-10. Shit happens, Z06's losing to stock Lightnings, C5 Vettes running mid 14's, hell I beat a 5.0 Mustang my first practice run. There is no point in making excuses because no one really gives a damn to hear it.

Exactly. Take me for instance. I'm 15 minutes from my campus, so i walk. The car only goes out when i need to go somewhere, ie. groceries or out with friends.

I spent 5000 bucks 2 years back to take a professional drivers training course, so my skills are top notch and i CAN drive like the pros. My difference is i'm just mucho inexperienced and my car doesn't exactly call for impressive track times.

For the inexperienced driver, even if they HAVE the skills, to compete with those numbers is near impossible unless you dedicate yourself to getting them. That being the case, you burn your car out real fast.

Many different views on this one, but i think what tops them all is:

That being said, there's not much we the 'commoners' can do. Excuses are stupid, and people that talk big and don't perform, well, we all know where they can go and how they make us feel.

Elevation makes an impact aswell, having lived in Calgary with my car, there's a big difference in how it performs between here (Ontario) and back west. Not to mention the prep of the track and such things as we've already discussed.

All in all, as long as people aren't talking smack and then embarassing themselves and/or asking stupid questions, we can all go home smiling at either victory or the knowledge that with a few more mods we'll be even faster.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Re: Anyone else know of people that talk like they drive like pros, and mag race?

Hmm I challenged some guy on another board to a race on several different occassions. Everytime his car was either broke, or not fast enough (He bought a new car). It seems like a busload of excuses, then I have to hear the other board members making fun of my driving, when I beat the majority of the people at the tracks times with the same car (i.e. another evo was running mid 14's, and STi's were running mid 14's). I just find it funny that people can sit back on a board and act like they drive like pros, and that varying conditions don't have any effect on a car's ability to generate good numbers. Anyways it was just my rant. Thanks for posting your thoughts as well, it helps me to know that I am not alone.

Re: Anyone else know of people that talk like they drive like pros, and mag race?

i've seen a c5 corvette run 14 flat
i've seen a supra run 13.8(over and over again)

i've also seen cars run faster times than mags
i seen a c5 vette run 13.1-2 within 4 runs( he said it was stock)

i seen a 03 cobra run 12.5 with what he says "just exhaust"

i seen a lightning run 14.0 also.

i haven't been this year yet so not sure what the evo's and sti's are running, but it seems that awd cars tend to have a pretty set time. like the vr4's running 13.5 and eclipse gsx i see running 15.2

thats what i see at the tracks

That has to be the longest title for a thread I have seen in a loong time
Anyways back on topic, there are many e-thugs that talk a lot and exaggerate their "skillz". You can't really do nothing about it except for beating them at the track. And if all fails, ignore them
