Hood strut replacement--99' GC
Has anyone purchased the engine hood struts at any of the local auto stores? Was it easy to install? Are they sold in pairs? $$$???

Yes you can get them at local auto stores. You can buy one or both. They are short ones, they should not cost too much and are not hard to put on. Just make sure you prop the hood. Do one at a time.

I have not found an aftermarket hood support for the 2000 GC anywhere.

Yes, I agree with WGMO, I went back to Auto Zone, Kragen's, NAPA, and few small indies....there had ZERO struts for the hood.
Alan111, do you recall what store you went to? The dealer's are very pricey at $60-80. I'm using a small wooden stick for now, so it's no big deal, but would like replace it one day. |

Keep me posted also-I need new ones too-I hate buying parts from the stealership ($$$$). I have not had much luck getting any aftermarket parts for my Jeep-Does anyone know a good internet site for WJ parts with good prices????????

Re: Hood strut replacement--99' GC
My 99 needs new hood struts as well. Half the used jeeps I looked at needed new ones. It's kinda weird that so many need to be replaced after less than 5 years.

Re: Hood strut replacement--99' GC
I called murrays discout auto, and they have them (supposedly)
That is hood struts for my 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L Hopefully they are not trying to sell me a rear window strut and pulled up the correct listing. I just started searching online to see what options are out there, (maybe something nicer than Murrays). Judging by this thread, there isn't much out there!! The Murrays units were about 12.XX EACH, x 2 Not much better than the Dealer pricing by the sounds of it! Last edited by Teeps; 11-28-2004 at 06:10 PM. |

I finally found two aftermarket hood struts at Rubicon4X4. The total cost was about 50 bucks with shipping. Very easy, two minute, install and working fine. To be safe have two people when doing the install, if you just use a stick to prop open the hood and it slips you could amputate fingers.

I have a 2001 GC, and also need to replace the hood struts. as I have founf NO aftermarter struts at any of the auto store. The dealer wants about 35 each. I am going to keep checking, if i find any I will post to let everyone know. This seems to be a common problem

Cost me 12 each at the local Murray's Discount Auto, here in Royal Oak, MI, Murray's is very similar to Autozone or Pepboys.
Pretty good deal, considering I doubt I could have paid less online, with shipping costs. I still had to wait about 5-7 work days to get them in, took me about 6 minutes to find my screwdrivers, and about 4 minutes to install the new struts, really easy. The little metal clips do NOT have to be completely removed from the strut assy, to slide the strut off the ball mount. So don't remove the new clips from the new struts (mine came with new clips). Just press the strutt agains the ball mount, and wedge the back of the spring clip out a little with a screw driver, they will pop right on. Be careful and make sure the hood is well supported while your removing the old struts. The run of the mill struts worked great, and seemed almost too powerful the first couple of times trying to close the hood, heh. They gave me the same p/n for both sides, I just had to rotate one end 180 degree's to mache the bottom alignment of the ball mount. Have fun, Don |

Re: Hood strut replacement--99' GC
I can get that for you later today, they were not packaged as the part number I listed earlier, ACDelco Part # 510-785 , I will see what was on the packaging, and also on the struts themselves.

Re: Hood strut replacement--99' GC
Looks like these are made by ArvinMeritor!!!
Good Company, I actually work for one of their joint ventures, and I didn't even know their light vehicle guys made these, haha. The name of the strut is "Strong Arm" "Gas Charged Lift Support" The P/N on the white sticker/barcode tag is 4048 And hand-written above that number on the tag is 315 I don't think it has much significance though. On the back it shows Arvin Meritors Plant address in South Carolina, well... .po box. But another p/n 99910017 Which is probably Arvinmeritor's Production p/n. Hope this helps, btw, they make some damn good stuff. |
