93 wrangler tail lights

i have been working on a 93' yj for a friend of mine. the wiring under the dash for the radio had been butchered, the factory harness removed, and random power wires running nowhere. i made a replica of the radio and speaker harness, ran the acc and power wires for the radio off an auxillary fuse block with the off road lights, and everything worked fine. however, about a week afterwords, the panel illumination and taillights stopped working, the brakelights still work, and the headlights work, along with the radio. no fuses blown. is it possible the previous owner wired something of one of these circuits? if so, where do i look? i am stumped...please help
