Please Help!
Got a 91 RS TBI, car was in a front end collision and sat for quite sometime. Body Shop took care of the body work, and now I got it for a tune up and detailing. Car ran horrible when I got it, needed a tune up badly. Mickey Mouse and his family were living in the air cleaner. I replaced the following: Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, PCV, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Oil Filter and did a oil change. Car ran great after tune up. I let it run for approx 5 minutes to warm up and top off coolant. After warm up car died and won't re-start. I have spark and fuel pressure. IAC wire is chewed up from mickey but not shorting out. Service engine light was on, but don't know the proper way to check the codes with a paper clip. Exhaust is loose and leaking, but shouldn't affect a no start. Cats are not clogged. Drivers side air bag is not in. Any helpful information would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks in advance!

Update:
Got the car to run after sitting for a while. Seemed that it was loaded up from too much fuel. I unplugged the injectors and the car started and ran for approx. 10 seconds and died. plugged the injectors back in and tried to start and it won't. Unplugged and after a few cranks it fires back up and runs for another ten seconds. |

Think I've narrowed it down to the IAC. I pulled it out, cleaned it and put it back in. Car started right up with the injectors plugged in and ran for a while. After approx. 5 minutes car when the car warmed up it stalled again.
How do I correctly check the codes, I know use a paper clip and ground out the upper two, on the plug under the dash. Is this a key on, off, engine running, or engine off test. After I recieve the codes is there somewhere online I can match the numbers up with? |

ok, connect the upper 2 slots together with the paperclip, the car should be off, and all accessories must be off as well, once your connect is made, turn the ignition on, don't start the car tho, you should hear the fan turn on, then the computer will start flashing the code to you via the SES light. first it'll flash code 12 (flash pause flash flash) 3 times then it'll give your trouble code. when you're done just post the code here and i'll look it up for you.

First Off, Thanks for the help.
Update: Went and got a new IAC this morning. Installed and plugged it in. Car ran great for 5 minutes until it warmed up, the idle surged and shut down. Can only re-start the car after un-plugging the injectors and cranking it for approx 10 seconds. After the fuel burns off, I plug the injectors back in and the car won't start at all. I checked the codes and I am getting Code 15. If someone can help me out with this again it would be a great . |

It appears that this is only happening when the car warms up. I can get the car to start if I put the gas pedal to the floor (this should shut off the injectors instead of un-plugging them). It only occurs when the temp gets around 200, 210. Maybe the high temps are telling the car to shut down? Maybe a thermostat, coolant flush and a temp sending unit might be at order?
I also noticed the Cat is quite red, and shooting out flames due to the excessive fuel from trying to start it. (I have the exhaust disconnected from the cat back). Last edited by Bryan C. King; 07-04-2004 at 04:52 PM. |

Sound like a bad CTS the car thinks its -45 degrees outside and is floods the car w/ gas- Change or oil if that works- Do you know where it is?

you have to reset the IAC anytime it's replaced.
jump the pins on the diagnostic port and turn the key on. wait 45 seconds then un-plug the IAC and the timing advance connector on the passenger side fender next to the fire wall. once those are disconected, remove the paper clip from the diag. port, and start the car. you may have to hold the peddle to the floor to get it started. let it run for about 2 min. you may have to goose the throttle to keep it running. after it's warmed up enough that you can take your foot off the throttle and it doesn't die, turn the car off and plug the IAC and timing connector back in. start the car up again, and drive atleast 45mph for about a minute

Thanks to all that helped, car is fixed!
I did not have to reset the IAC, I bought a new CTS and installed it. Car fired right up and ran like a top. Again thanks to all that helped, great group of people here. |
