89 Mustang GT surges, dies start/no start
I have a mint+++ 89 GT convert, 100,000 miles. After 2-3 miles (operating temp) engine surges and lopes when stopped, then it dies. It will restart sometimes you can hear fuel pump run, most time it will not as fuel pump does not whine. After car sits for an hour or cools down, it starts fine until engine dies while stopped with brakes applied again. Will also surge and lope in park or neutral but always restarts. Does not surge or stumble while driving. Fuel pump sounds very loud compared to when car was new although the tank is nearly empty now (using up the gas to drop the tank soon.) Car has been babied since bought new in 89, never driven in snow, has no modifications.

i had a sort of similar problem with my '92 accord... that turned out to be the fuel pump relay. i'd check that first.

besides the fuel pump, the surging at idle could also be your idle air control valve.
