Air-intake Mod. Question

First off, I want to wish all a happy and safe 4th of July.

Does modifying the air intake have any effect on MPG? Since I modified the air box I noticed a reduction in my MPG. I used to get 18 mpg around town know I'm only getting around 16 mpg or less, is there any correlation.

Re: Air-intake Mod. Question

I have heard this as well, personally in my car I have seen an increase in mileage with my K&N/airbox gut, possibly because I have a cat back exhaust as well. Ideally proper mods (stage 1, 2 and 3) should increase mileage.

I feel better knowing that I'm not imagining the lower mileage. Now I know I'm not the only unlucky SOB.

Re: Air-intake Mod. Question

I noticed the same 2mpg drop. The resultant sound and performance is worth it, though :-)

Re: Air-intake Mod. Question

Its pretty simple to see:

GM Engineer 1: Ok, here we have a V8, its not very fuel effiecient, what do we do?
GM Engineer 2: Ooooh! Pick me! lets fill the airbox with ugly yellow innards so that less air gets in and the resulting lower volume of air will ensure better fuel efficiency!
GM execs: Brilliant..heres a raise!

Aurora Driver: Here I have this wonderful V8, I want more out of it...what do I do?
Aurora Driver 2: Take that yellow crap out of the air box, more air = faster...
Aurora Driver 1: Wont that affect my mpg?
Aurora Driver 2: Does it matter?!
