What should I do?

Ok guys n gals question here. Things fell through on the 88 so I still have it. I wanted to know which rear-end you guys think would be better to keep? The one from the 82 or the one from the 88, I'm planning on yanking out the auto-trans with over-drive out of the 88 and put it in the 82 since it has the 3 speed auto in it. Theres nothing wrong with the 3 speed auto or anything it has a shift kit in it and all that a works great but I need that forth gear since its my daily driver. Is there anything that I might be over looking also just incase, like should I keep the drive shaft, flywheel and converter out of the 88 aswell? Also I will be parting out the 88 so if someone needs anything just give me a buzz cuz besides the tranny and maybe the rear-end the rest is up for the taking, the car actually runs but the valve seals are bad so it smokes and the 82 is enough of a money pit for me right now...LOL

Re: What should I do?

Is the 88 a 9 bolt rearend?? Either way you will need to use the driveshaft from it. The 3 spd is a different length and that driveshaft wont work with the 4 spd. Im not sure if the crossmember is different but you should have a look just to be sure.

Re: What should I do?

Well I know that all 84-2002 driveshafts are interchangable and the reason 82 and 83 may not fit is because of the different transmissions they had.

if the 3spd has the 9 inch tailshaft, the driveshafts are interchangable. the 700R4 is only 1/2 inch shorter than a th350. and both have a 30 spline output shaft i think.

and yes the crossmember location is different on the 2 trannys. to replace a th350 with a 700R4, you will have to move the crossmember towards the front of the car about 2 inches

I believe its an 88 rs, it has the TBI 305 in it. Im not sure about the rear-end in it except that its whatever the stock one was in 88. The car runs but does smoke when it first started so I figure the valves are bad. Besides the tranny, driveshaft, and maybe the converter and rear-end everything is up for grabs. It has a grey interior thats in fair to decent shape.

So basically I will need to move the crossmember forward and maybe use the driveshaft out of the 88? Other than that it shouldnt be no big deal right just a normal tranny job. Both cars the 82 and 88 are stock rear-ends for their years, the only thing is the 82 has had the shift kit put in it.

well actualy there could be a number of differnet legths for the 700 depending on the tail shaft. they have like 3 different tail shafts i think. the corvette one should be avoided beause it does not have a normal cross member mount. usualy there is like 2 and 1/4 inches between a 700 and 350. thats with the most commen tail shaft.

ridge: a 2004r is the same legnth as a 350 thought so you might want to make sure it really is the 700 and not a 200.

the output shaft actauly has 27 splines on all but a 400 and 4l80E. those have a 32 splines. and you will need to move the cross member back acordily depending on the tail shaft, but like earlyer with the most commen one it will be back 1 and 1/4 inches, and have to shorten the shaft 2.75 inches.

Re: What should I do?

oh yeah i didnt think about that. use the drivshaft that was with the 700 and you should be fine there, but you will need to move the crossmember, backwards, unless the 3 speed is a 400 then you would need to move it forward.

Whats the easiest way to tell what tranny is in the 88? Is there a number on the pan or something I could go look at to find out?

I believe the tranny thats in the 82 is a 350 3 speed and I have no clue whats in the 88. I just know its a stock tranny for the 305 and it had over-drive so thats why I want it.
