91 Loyale Clicks

I have a 1991 Loyale. When I try to start it it will only click. Sounds like a relay or something under the dash clicking. After several tries, it will eventually start. I replaced the relay that was clicking and it did not help. Also, it does not do this everytime and there is nothing I can do to get it to start except keep turning the key and waiting. Any ideas on what I can do.

Thanks,
Wanda

Re: 91 Loyale Clicks

Thanks for the quick reply. Don't think it is the starter. The relay I replaced still clicks. I tend to think it may be something affecting this relay. I may be totally off course. When I replaced the relay it was a couple of weeks before the clicking started again. This is the first Subaru I have ever owned and it has me at my wits end. It sounds like a neutral safety switch on American Vehicles. Checked the neutral safety and it seems to be operating properly.

If the car is an automatic, it could be the neutral safety switch. Try jiggling the shifter while starting.

Corroded battery cables, starter crapping out.. those can cause the problem you are having.

My vote is for the ignition switch though. While it is more common on the EA81 subarus, the EA82 soobs have had a few troubles with this as well.

PS, the click you are hearing is the ignition relay, if its clicking, its working.

Thanks! Only wish I had know that if the relay was clicking is was working. I contacted the local Subaru mechanic and he said that the starter contacts were my problem. Said these care were famous for that and he could replace the contacts in my starter for about 90 bucks. Told him thanks but that I work at the local NAPA and can get a starter for less than that and install it myself. I figure a new starter will last longer than and old one with new contacts. Again, thanks for your reply.
