Re: Auto vs Manual trans
Limiting in what way? Your driving habits? Engine power? Vehicle performance? Traction? what?

Re: Auto vs Manual trans
Uphill, an AT will be the same if the torque converter is locked (>50 mph). Below 45 mph, an AT is less efficient (burning up power - heating up).
Downhill they are the same if the torgue converter is locked, but unlocked, the AT provides less braking torque at the same gear ratio. There is nothing stopping you from going to a lower gear with either tranny. One thing an AT has going for it is that it is much better for an inexperienced driver. You will never lug the engine or overrev it. It keeps the engine more or less in the power band up a hill. |

I have an auto right now but I think that I will go with a manual when I get my next 4 runner an 85. I guess I will need to practice to get comfortable with a manual, but that should be a hole lot of fun .

Re: Auto vs Manual trans
Manual transmissions are definitely the way to go unless your truck is for commuting in stop and go traffic on a daily basis.
