Air Conditioning

I have a 98 S70 which I very much enjoy despite the nuisance problems. However, my AC compressor is not kicking in. If I disconnect the battery cable for awhile and then replace it, the AC compressor will cycle and the cabin will be very comfortable. This will work anywhere from a day to a week before it reverts to the faulty condition. Also, the system has been fully evacuated, leak tested, and fully charged with coolant.

My climate control works fine as it continues to run the fan using outside air to reach the setpoint (unless it is too hot out). The compressor relay is fine as, after pulling the cable, it cycles just fine. All fuses show continuity.

I'm afraid I've got an expensive computer problem. Any ideas out there?

My local dealer wants $95 just to discover what I already know.

Hello rloepp;
I know you have had this up for awhile and probablly already had this problem fixed. Maybe other folks may see this and give them some help. I have had seen this before and the way I found it was through a Volvo Tech. If you're compressor clutch stops working while A/C is one for a while, (this is kind of tricky) try tapping the front part of the A/C clutch with something and see if the cluch engages and works for awhile. They seem to have a magnetic engagement problem. The only way to fix this is to replace the compressor assembly. Sorry about this, because gets pretty expensive.

Not true, you can replace the clutch assembly, if the compressor is fine.

No for $95 the dealer will tell you, what you don't know. Because if you did know you wouldn't be here asking, now would you.

Thanks for your information I have a 98 S70 T/5, I have noticed some of the same problems mentioned here in this fourm. I will need to replace one of both of the A/C sensors to to have my A/C working again hopefyllyI will go in and change the cabin filter as that may be a stumbling block as well.
