Re: 1991 Camaro help
The cost to put a 350 in has so many variables that it'd be tough for anyone to give you a reasonable estimate.. How much work can you do yourself? mechanically inclined? fabrication experience? How readily available are all the parts? Do you want FI or stick with carb? Is the rest of your drivetrain up to handling the extra torque?
As for horsepower for the 305.. Not a big fan of the 305, But you should start with the basics.. Air intake, exhaust and headers will dree up a little power.. how much money do you want to spend? After that ide look at heads, intake manifold, aftermarket carb, and a Cam

Re: 1991 Camaro help
yeah that was the first thing i was thinking. that someone already ripped out the computer controlled equipment and put a carbed engine in there, all i can say is i hope you dont have to pass emissions if thats the case, cuz you wont. and its gonna be a major project and a pain in your ass and wallet to fix it. i would sell it to someone who lives in a non emissions state, and buy another camaro to work with, that hasnt been butchard up.
however if its not been screwed with and youre just confusing the TBI for a carb, switching to a 350 is pretty easy. if you get a 350 block with the rotating assembly it will bolt right in where the 305 was. all accessories will bolt right up. you will also need the EPROM chip from a 350 car.

Re: 1991 Camaro help
it's based on county laws, i used to live in n.w. indiana before i moved to chi town and lake and porter county had emissions, the rest of the state didn't except indy

b/w 305 and 350, it all depends on gas mileage. since it 91 with tbi im guessing you have an L03 sittin under your hood, which isnt a bad engine, but stock not good either. if you have a 350 or got one for cheap you could throw that in. however if you wanna keep the 305, there couple of mods you can do to that. 3 problem areas for these engines are the crappy intake (air filter system really chokes it), swirl port heads, and rear end. keeping the 305, id provide it with more breathing room, either an open air element or "ram air", or whatever else you can do to it. if you got the money, find better heads, because these swirl ports they have in the stock really rob performance. finally, the rear ends are geared for fuel economy and really long burnouts if you can even get them to spin. stock, your running a 10 bolt 2.73 rear end. id recommend upgrading to either 3.08 (posi or not) if you wanna keep fuel economy or get 3.23 posi or better. there are other mods of course but these are the basic problem areas for this setup. hope this helps
hellraiser ps. btw, these 305's are verry good runners. ive seen some with at least 250,000 them and still runnin strong. and as for emmisions, i live in chicago suburbs, and depending on where your at you could be living in a county where they test, but some zipcodes can be exempt in that county. ie. my adress is in monee, il but manhattan, peotone, i think frankfort and manteno and few others around me dont hafta test (but i still do )

Re: 1991 Camaro help
I love McLennan Co. very minimal emissions, plus I'm exempt from most laws because I have a truck.
I just have to retain all my exhaust components or replace them with an equivalent, but I know of people who take the coals out of their cats and weld them back up and nobody's the wiser somehow.
