2002 Explorer idle question (dealer is clueless)
I have a 2002 Explorer 6 cylinder with 36000 miles. Anything under 1000 rpms the engine is starting to run rough, it even shakes you in the seat sometimes. Recently it has stalled about 3 times while stopped for a red light and needed restart. The dealer cant find anything wrong with it, according to the computer its fine. Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks! Also Ive had a problem with the fuel gauge taking a few days to show full after a fill up, and Ford states they are aware but dont have a fix for that yet.

What kind of oil filter are you using? Fram's are notorious for causing oil flow problems, and on my explorer it shows up as a rough idle. Other things to try, clean the MAF, TPS, IAC, throttle body, and new air filter. As for the gauge problem, if it's still under warranty make them do everything possible until they fix it...replace sensors, float, etc. Check into your states lemon law. I would never drive around not knowing how much gas my tank had in it.

Me too
I just got an 02 explorer, and I am experiencing rough idle. The car hums along fine at 70, but when it is in park or stopped, you can feel the engine idling roughly. I cleaned the MAF, changed the plugs, and put in a K&N air filter. I would appreciate any feedback.

Re: 2002 Explorer idle question (dealer is clueless)
There is an IAC valve mounted in the throttle body located under the top cover. I'm not saying it's definately your problem however it is responsible for supplying the air during idle. The pcm pulses voltage to it. If it's not opening enough I suppose it could give you a rough idle. If it goes bad you will not get an engine code. They cost from 50.00 - 100.00 . Shop around.

I second the IAC (idle air control valve) as the problem!
