'92 stalling after start

I recently bearly passed the state inspection, they told me that not all of the gas was burning right. I knew the plugs needed to be changed and so I did. I got some Bosch Platinum +4 for the car's 3.8 v6.

I disconnected the battery, changed the plugs, and the car started up fine and then stalled on me.

It did it twice, but I was able to take it around the neighborhood and the car ran great. Accelerated really good and it didin't stall on me.

The car runs great, except that in the morning it tends to want to stall on me when I first fire it up for the day. Afterwards it will only do it if the engine is cold.

Any ideas?

BTW, I also found out that the darn thing had mixed plugs. It had autolite, champion, motorcraft, and motorcract platinums.

Re: '92 stalling after start

Ther are various sensors telling the ECA (Electronic Control Assembly) what conditions exist in the engine. The ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) and the ACT (Air Charge Temperature) would be the two most suspect, in my opinion. They do much the same as the choke in the carburated engines, telling the ECA to enrich the fuel supply while the engine is cold and constantly adjusting as the engine temp changes. This is my interpretation of these sensors and I am not a professional mechanic. There may be other problems with the engine but I would start with these. The mixed plugs are no big problem if they were all the same heat range recommened for the vehicle. It does suggest the previous owner was not real meticulous in his/her vehicle upkeep.

Re: '92 stalling after start

I went up to the place were I bought them and asked about them. They said something about it doing that due to too much platinum when it starts.

It just stalls once on start up, but otherwise than that, it gives me greater gas milage, quicker and smoother acceleration.

Hmmm Never heard that one before. Do you think you could get them to elaborate on this diagnosis? I assume you are talking about the new plugs. Wouldn't bet my life that it couldn't be the problem but wouldn't bet that it could either. Hope you post back with an update.

I think it's bull too.

Just that little anoyance. On a cold starts it stalls just once, after that it runs good.

I'm thinking maybe I put too much pressure somewhere when I was changing out the plugs.

this is why ford gives you a certain type of plug to use with that engine its specifically designed to be used for optimal engine life and preformance adding the platnum plugs wont do anything but harm your engine because it isnt made for it..

There is nothing wrong with running platinum plugs in these cars; they will work just fine.

But you do need to change ALL the plugs and get rid of those Bosch plugs you put in. You need to put in 6 new Motorcrafts or Autolites. Come back if you still have problems.
