good tires?

I'm looking into a new set of tires for my 2001 f-150. Stock is 265/70/17, if I remember correctly. I was looking into some BFGoodrich M/T's, but for $192 a piece is it worth it? Also how much wider can i go without rubbing, maybe 285? Thanks all!

Re: good tires?

I run BFG Mud T/A's on an 01 dodge quad cab diesel. these are the only tires I have had any success with when it comes to longevity. I do a lot of off road work with them, and have had no problems there, they do produce a mild whine on the road, but suh is the price you pay for a half decent traction tire.

How good are they as far as wear goes for mostly street driving?

Re: good tires?

Well, here is a list. I have used michelin LTX M/S 245/75/16, ( stock tires) 22,000 km, worn out. Avon Ranger 285/75/16, 27,300 km, worn out. Kal Tire Baja Widetrack, 285/75/16, 900 km, bad casings, had them replaced with BFG Mud T/A, 285/75/16. At the time of install, truck had about 51,000 km on it. Truck is now sitting at 122,000 km, and the tires still have better than 65% tread left on them.

For the math challenged, thats 71,000 km, more than I got on the first three sets of tires combined.

Best of luck on your choice of tire.

Sorry, I'm full of questions, but how about snow/ice? Good or bad with the agressive tread/lug pattern?

Re: good tires?

In loose / deep snow, they work very well, even in warm somewhat slippery conditions. They are not the greatest in purely icy conditions, although they hold their own, and if you drive with your brain, instead of the "drive by ear / feel " method, you should be fine.
Single biggest advantage i find, is that the tread cleans out well, allowing for better traction in most conditions. If you do most of your driving on glare ice, use an avon ranger for max traction, or perhaps a nokian hakkapelita.

Well I live in Wisconsin so good ice and snow traction is a must, but I also dont want to change tires for winter and summer cause I dont have that kind of money. I'm considering either the AT's the MT's, but I'm just not sure.

Re: good tires?

Ok, I run the M/T, as the best all around tire. I live in the Yukon, so perhaps I understand the need for winter traction

I know a number of people who run the all terrains, and although they are a softer tire, providing better on road traction, they plug up badly in the mud, and wear out before you finish reading this sentence.

Go forth, and choose wisely.
