Race Card #60-Hey Richard, where'd you get that fancy top?

Race Card #60-Hey Richard, where'd you get that fancy top?

Anytime the "King" did something out of the ordinary it made news in the late sixties and most of the seventies but this little roof treatment had everybody guessing. I'm not sure if it was an attempt at improving airflow over the Road Runner's roof or something stolen from the fashion world.

The breaking up of top and bottom in clothing by contrasting colors is used to hide some of the "demension problems" in people and the concept could have well been at work in the Petty camp for the Daytona 500 in '68. He had the fastest Mopar by far and if you noticed he had a two toned Plymouth at Daytona for the Firecracker race also.

Petty has been accused of lots of things-subtle, crafty, even downright sneaky. But he ain't never been accused of being dumb when it concernces his race cars. Kinda makes you go HMMMMM. Don't it?

So you're sayin' he changed the roof shape for improved aerodynamics, and painted it black to hide the differences? Or am I just readin' too much into it?

Model rocks, of course.... It's getting to where I forget to say that about your cars, it's such a given.

willimo, I'm just sort of observing but you never can tell about the good ol' boys from down south.

SchuberT, these are pics of cars in my collection that are already built. But I did build the Yarborough Cyclone in two days, it's the last one I've built lately. And there was that Saturday back in my dirt track racing days. I built and painted six and lettered four of them to deliver to the track in one day. And that was stripping out Mustang and Camaro bodies, shortening Nascar chassis and narrowing the roll cages to fit under smaller bodies. Course I was crazy back then and didn't know it couldn't be done so I did it anyway.LOL

Great Model! The roof reminds me of when Penske ran his Trans Am Camaro with a vinyl roof for one race... The rumor was that the shell had been dipped in acid for a little too long, and the vinyl was to prevent the SCCA tech people from realizing that the underlying sheet metal was thinner than required.
