broken wheel stud

I need to replace a front right wheel stud on my 88 Accord. The spindle assembly is in the way. A friend told me to get a slide hammer to pull the hub out some, so I can change the stud. And, if I pull the hub out too far, I'll have to have the hub pressed in again. Is this the easiest way?

Also, I don't think my impact gun has enough torque to get the hub back in (using it on the center nut to drive the hub in). I've never seen or used a slide hammer before. Can I use it in the reverse direction?
