Unhappy How are E39 540i's

I plan on selling my E32 750il for a E39 540i. Does anyone recommend the 540 over the 750. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with the 540.

I've never owned one, but I have friends that have owned E39 530i's and a E39 M5. There great cars. A little on the big side for my liking, buy an excellent option for a 7-series replacement. Handles great, incredibly reliable, and the BMW 4.0 is a great engine. I think that consumer reports called it "the best car they've ever tested."

The E39 540's are 4.4L. So you think its a good swap, 750 for a 540?

I don't own one ( ), but I can tell you that 540i's will hold their value a hell of a lot better than a same-year 750iL! I'd attribute this to the fact that 7's are [perceived] to be so complicated, and the general public, which is already scared of "old" cars, does not want to be bothered with the complexity of these big BMWs. I thought about a 735i or 735iL, but ended up getting a 535i partly because of this same apprehension; plus my 1990 535i is worth MORE KBB than a 1990 735i or 735iL.

Anyway, hell yes I'd go for the E39 540i! More common than the majestic 750iL, but also a much newer design (1997 vs. 1988) and, as others have said, a bit sportier. And when you compare to the 528i, pretty rare too.

As I said, I don't own one, but am sure it would offer much more in the way of reasonable repair costs than a 750. Plus an edge in fuel economy.

Sounds like a good move to me! (Plus the E39 540i has been my dream car since I was 15, six years ago).

I have a 2000 540 sport and it rocks...much better than the 750 for sport handling and fun, but not as luxurious as the 750.

================================================== =========

This is my first BMW, and I cannot tell you anything about the seven series, other than their larger than the five series, (duuu you don't say, Just kidding, LOL).

I myself own a 2004 E60 530i, that I bought new April 2004, and the car is great! I not only quick for a six cylinder... 0-40 in 3.8 seconds, but handles extremely well, and gets excellent gas mileage 29 city and 34.7 highway.

I am told that the E39's 540i's are excellent cars also.
