Engine Swap?
So, since no one seems to be able to add a supercharger or turbo (or find other means to get significant more power out of the engine), what is the feasibilty of putting a whole new engine in the car? I would think sticking with a Ford or Lincoln engine for compatibility would be best, but I don't know much about the fine workings of an engine (I just want a car with balls, hehe). Would there be enough room in the engine compartment for different engine? I also understand it's fairly complex to change engines in a new car because of all the electronics and sensors. Is there any good solution to work around this - would a good mechanic know how to make everything work correctly?
I would like to hear some thoughts on this, if it's possible, or if it would be very difficult/almost impossible. I'm not thinking about doing this seriously right now, but perhaps in several years if I hang on to this car that long. I love the way my car looks, and if I decide to keep it for many years, I would like to be able to turn it into a real beast. (Or should I just buy a GTO?) |

Transmission * Model: 4R75W 4spd automatic * Calibration: Unique transmission calibration for reduced shift times * Temperature Monitoring: Unique algorithm to limit power/torque to prevent overheating Exhaust * Mufflers / Cats: Removed for increased flow * H-Pipe: Replaced with X-Pipe to optimize pressure scavenging * Sizing: Replaced cold-side with 2.5" stainless tubing * Tip: Polished S197 Mustang tip Aerodynamics * Front / Rear: Aero kickers for high speed / crosswind stability * Underbelly: Front undercarriage shield for reduction of front axle lift * Deck-lid: 5-way adjustable rear deck-lid spoiler Chassis Wheels / Tires * Front: Forged BBS 18 x 9 – P275/35/18 (Michelin Pilot Sport2) * Rear: Forged BBS 18 x 9 – P275/35/18 (Michelin Pilot Sport2) Rear Differential * Differential: TORSEN limited slip with 3.58 ratio * Half Shafts: 2002 T-bird (40mm) Springs / Shocks / Stabar / Toe-link * F/R Spring Rates: 61 / 63 N/mm * F/R Stabar: 31.5mm Grippy / 21mm Solid * F/R Shocks: LEDA 24-way adjustable dampers with adjustable spring perch * Rear toe-link: Replaced compliant toe-link with solid link Brakes * Front: 330 mm – Cobra Brembo rotors with unique friction material * Rear: Unique friction material * F/R lines: Stainless / braided lines * Ducts: Front brake cooling ducts Ride Heights * Front: Lowered 25 mm * Rear: Lowered 20 mm Alignment * Front: Increased Camber to –1.5 deg * Rear: Increased Camber to –1.3 deg but the engine didn't communicate with the car very well - some guages didn't work, ..etc. awesome possiblities......

Re: Engine Swap?
I got my name on it, too. I got a chance to talk to the builders a couple times. It actually used two computers. One computer from a Mustang, I believe, to control the powertrain and the regular LS computer to control everything else (windows, locks, climate control, radio, etc.). If I'm not mistaken, Chet (one of the builders/drivers) said the two systems didn't talk at all. I'm thinking they lost ABS and traction control systems, as well. Not 100% on that, though. I KNOW they lost the speedo and the tach was only barely functional. It always read a couple hundred RPM off, but since it was consistently wrong, they could use it.

Yeah, that's about what I figured. Too bad there are so many complications, 430HP would be pretty nice. I have the 2001 LS, so mine only puts out 250HP according to the specs. Although the newer ones are a bit more powerful, it's still a shame to see manufacturers put weak V8's in cars these days. My friend has a Maxima with a V6 and more power than my car. It's pretty sad when some manufacturers can get more power out of a 6 cylinder than Ford and Chevy get from a V8. I don't have anything against foreign cars, I just didn't care for the looks of any - I love the way the LS looks. I just wish Lincoln would give it an engine to match the looks. I guess next time, I'll just have to buy a sports car, or at least something that can be modded.
Thanks for the info, anyway. |

Re: Engine Swap?
You can get that '01 up to about 280 with intake and exhaust mods. Figure a grand for the whole lot. I did it. Haven't looked back. Lovin' it!

Yeah, it's a shame I have to spend money to get it up to the level the new LS's are at. And, I'd rather see numbers over 300HP from modifications. Oh well, it's still a great looking car.

Re: Engine Swap?
Just curious, what was the first year for the 280- hp LS?

I think it's 2003 that the engines were upped to 280HP. You can look up specs on the different years, though to see when the power changed.

Re: Engine Swap?
Whew...old posts but I need to post this, I've got 2 2000 Lincoln LS's, bought used and even though I know there are faster cars taking off, I havn't found more than 1 or 2 that can take them on. They feel like they already have a turbo in them. Didn't know this guy in a souped up later model firebird was going to show off his "car" after making a turn, but I know he wouldn't have been able to pass me if I knew he was going to stomp on his pedal. Wish I could put that engine and tranny in one of my other cars, like a 93 300ZX 2+2 I bought to convert to a TT300Z. Love my LS's...

Re: Engine Swap?
How about a car swap for a Jaguar S type R Supercharged 4.2L V8 @ 400hp!
