Radiator flush and Coolant selection
I have a 99 GC and cannot figure out how to drain the coolant. The manual says to open the drain on the radiator (which I did but nothing comes out) and open the engine block drain plugs (which I can't locate). Do you have to open these engine drain plugs to flush the system and if so where are they? Please help, My coolant is in pretty bad shape. Also, Is Dex-cool compatible (the red stuff) with these systems or do I have to stick with the green stuff?
Any info on draining and flushing the cooling system is greatly appreciated! |

Re: Radiator flush and Coolant selection
Dang I hate that server to busy – had a reply and lost it
Here we go again There are flushing kits available where you istall a “T” in the heater hose, attach a garden hose and push out the old antifreeze. Not to environmentally friendly but I have improved on it by draining as much as I can and catching the rest in a 25 gallon garbage can as it comes out the top of the rad. That way I can choose where it is disposed at. Your rad drain is probably plugged with sediment. Remove the fitting completely and poke a wire or small screwdriver in the hole to break it up. You’ll get a gusher for sure.. The block drains on the V8’s are in the middle on each side under the exhaust manifolds. They could be plugged up as well. Mostly I just drain at the radiator. You could also pull the bottom rad hose off tool. I would stay away from Dex Cool. It’s been bad news for many owners. Just do a search for it’s name on the internet. Regular antifreeze is the best with a 50/50 mix. Good on ya for changing the antifreeze. It is a often neglected service that will pay off in the future JD |

Thanks JD- I had no idea how many problems Dex-cool had caused. Sounds like sticking with the green stuff is the way to go. Thanks again, it sounds like you saved me a lot of headaches and money!!
