Car shuts off and will not start - 3.8L

I have a 1999 Pontiuac grand prix with a 3.8L engine and have a serious problem. I can be driving down the road the the car shuts off. If I drive the car for awhile it will not restart after sitting just a few minutes. This all happens when the car is warm and about a half a tank or less of gas. Once the car sits for awhile it will restart.

Can anyone give me an idea of what might be wrong with the car?

Re: Car shuts off and will not start - 3.8L

Hi sbjnmo,

I had a simmilar problem with my 99 GTP. It would stall at red lights, but would start right up. It didn't matter if it was cold/hot, full tank or AC on/off. The dealer did all kinds of stuff to it, including fuel injector cleaning, replace fuel filter, tune up, 25,000 mile maintenance, ect. nothing worked. Finally one day I decided to replace the coil packs and the module under them. The problem went away and has not come back in two years.

Hope that helps,
G

Thanks I will look into this. I was also told that it might be a Fuel Pump Resistor. Did they say anything to you about this at the dealer?

Hi Sbjnmo,

The dealer never mentioned Fuel Pump resistor. They did mention Fuel Pump but fuel pressure was within normal limits. It is lucky that I stoped them at the $600.00 mark.

Regards,
G
