Is it safe to clean engine?

Hey Guys!

I have a 1996 Integra LS that I recently acquired from my sister. The engine is pretty dirty and I would like to clean everything under the hood including the hood itself. Is this safe? And have any of you done it? If so, what do you use and how do you suggest doing it?

Any help is appreciated!

i use grease lightning. does not leave a nasty film like the castrol engine cleaner. i spray it all over the engine, and in the really bad areas i get a small brush. one bottle of grease lightning usually does it. when u wash it off make sure to do it with a lite mist. you can see the electronics so you caution around them. they can get a little water on them but not soaked. you should watch out for the fuse box and the distributor for sure. other than that happy cleanin'. and do this on a warm to cool engine. not hot.

Have you heard of using simple green? i read in another forum about people spraying down the engine with simple green, let it soak for about 15mins, then spray off.

And thanks for the welcome! this is a great forum!

yes you can use simple green as well, alot of people swear by it, make sure and cover up your distributor and fuse box and anything else electrical that your concerned about, cover up your intake as well if you have an exposed filter.

Re: Is it safe to clean engine?

I like grease lightning myself, but the main thing to remember is not to spray a hot engine and to be careful around the electronics. Happy cleaning
