Air conditioning conversion kits

The last time I was in the parts store I noticed a kit that would change over an R-12 system to an R-134a system. The kit is $30 dollars. It comes with a leak seal, discharge can to empty system, and some other stuff. I was wondering if anyone has tried this? My AC does not work now, needs recharged, but does not leak. I have an 89 Cherokee, I6, 2wd, Auto.

I have the same problem with my 1991 Cherokee. Since my kit didn't leak either, I took it to a local repair shop that I had dealt with for a while.

They used an R-12 replacement refrigerant that cost significantly less and they swore that it worked better than R134 without hurting the old system. At $125, two pounds of refrigerant and some labor gave me some ice cold air.

You might want to call around and see if someone offers this same replacement. If your system doesn't leak then it might work for you as well.

According to the air conditioning forum, these kits are not worth a nickle. I am in the same boat as you. Either sweat or pay $75 a pound for R12. You can convert, but it means flushing your system, changing the drier/accumulator, changing the O rings, pulling a vacuum for 20-30 minutes to dry the system, then charge with R134. I too have not heard any good news gregarding these "quickie" conversions. Fortunately, I bought a case of those little R12 cans before the went off the market so I'm good for a long while.

If youre ever in mexico you can get r12 for next to nothing they still make it there, you can have your'e system charged for about $15 but you will have to go to mexico to do it

Thanks for the info, I'm on my way to Mexico, l.o.l. I think I will take it to a garage and let the pros handle this one. I don't want a hole in the ozone above my house. Thanks.
