Timing belt or chain?

On the 2000 toyota corolla automatic, is it a belt or chain. Do it really need replacement at 60,000 miles if it is a chain? Most timing chains last way past 100,000 miles.

2000 Corolla has a timing chain, and typically I don't recommend replacing it until it's noise, or stretches and the timing jumps. I have seen some Corollas (98 and newer) with a lot of miles that and haven't seen a chain problem yet.

Re: Timing belt or chain?

thanks, my daughters 99 has about 88k and i was told it has a chain, but everywhere you check it says belt and 60k. boy that timing cover looks like it would be a bugger to get off.

Re: Timing belt or chain?

Generally chains last a long time, sometimes upwards of 200k miles. However, the tensioner do wear out. I think sometimes they are made of plastic. But those are usually pretty simple to change out.

Re: Timing belt or chain?

all "A" series engine (4a, 7a) have timing belts, all "ZZ" series engines (1zz-fe, 2zz-ge)have timing chains. Unless you starve you engine of oil, you should not have to change the chain untill you need to change the piston rings (overhaul)

Re: Timing belt or chain?

Maximum Chain elongation is 4.827 inches over 16 links. Just make sure it is stretched tight.
