Tune up thoughts...

I am looking for suggestions on tuning up my 1984 944. I did all the belts, dist, rotor, wires. It has only 54k on it, so it's still running like a champ. Beautiful car. I'm just looking for some hints, maybe better spark plugs, better ignition, something to pep it up???
Thanks...
Jim

Well, if it's "running like a champ", I would suggest not doing a thing! And if you want to pep it up, spark plugs and ignition are not the places to start from (or change at all if you already have). For more HP you could try exhaust, headers, K&N, MAF....or selling it and buying a turbo.

Well, actually the best place to start is the basics. Make sure the ignition system, fuel and air filters are up to snuff before you go adding after market goodies.

Re: Tune up thoughts...

Describe pep.

More pep could mean better throttle response. A MAF kit would be the quickest way to your goal. Possibly a lightened flywheel and so on.

More pep could also mean more power. Exhaust, headers, cat bypass. That's about it for engine bolt-ons. After that you go inside.

Re: Tune up thoughts...

I'd hate to plug this in, but have you tried a DE or AutoX? It's god awful expensive to upgrade a car but it can be much cheaper to upgrade the driver.

You wouldn't believe how much go your car really has.

Well, more pep as in it likes to lag a little on initial acceleration rather than just open up. And when I let go of the accelerator with the clutch disengaged the motor drops below 1k sounding like it's about to stall, but then comes right back above 1k and sits perfect, all within a second. And were those chips you were mentioning? What weight oil is prefered for the summer months?
Thanks for the help!

Not chips, driver improvement! DE= Driver Education, AutoX= Autocrossing.

Both of which teach you about the real limits of your car and yourself in a "safe" manner.

Usually a 15-50 or 20-50 weight oil for summer driving.

Also, for your shudder fix.

Re: Tune up thoughts...

It sounds like what you want is better throttle response....in which case, as stated above an MAF kit will be the best option, but will also be $$$....so maybe try a chip and throttle response cam...

Re: Tune up thoughts...

or you can always skip the $30 or so for the throttle response cam and make your own like i did. it looks stock, until you look harder.

Re: Tune up thoughts...

dont worry, i had to do some research too when i first heard about it. the throttle cam goes on top of the throttle body and the accelerator cable hooks up to it. the stock one has a big arm coming off it so you have to push the gas pedal down alot to get it to rev. you can buy throttle cams that are a little smaller and dont have the arm, so when you push the pedal the same amount, it revs higher. basically it makes it seem like your throttle response is better.
