89 chevy Truck Speedometer

I all. I have a 89 chevy truck with 245,000 mi. When I'm driving, the speedometer and cruise control will stop working. If I slap the dash with my hand the speedometer will come back on, and I can set my cruise back. Sometimes this will happen allot in a row, then sometimes I can travel 50 or so miles until it does it again. I'm getting tired of slapping the dash!

Also my factory radio controls will stop working, they just stick in one spot, and a slap on the dash will get them back to working.

I have taken the dash apart several times, but can't see any thing wrong. Could there be a ground wire somewhere that has come loose?

Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone have any idea's?

Thanks

89 Chevy Truck Speedo

Hi Texas River Pirate

I have the same problem with my '89 k1500 with 210,000 miles. I have found several sites on the web that will repair these clusters. I also took apart my dash and saw nothing obvious.
Chevy dealer was useless...

good luck

dash problem

Hey! My dash has the same problem, it will cut out when you least expect it to and messes up cruise control as well as sets a trouble code if you do not notice it right away and slap the dash to fix. I took it to my local dealer and they were the ones who told me how to "fix" the problem with a slap in the first place. Apparently this is a common problem with this model years electronic dash but I wasn't about to sink over $300 for parts from the dealer to replace. Has anyone out there found anywhere to get this fixed or replaced that is reasonable?
