Unhappy 94 Z28 rear end problems, and a weekend of hell.

well i would have some times to post from bristol but on my first
run the rear end popped really loud and thumped and popped the
whole way down the track. so i was out on my first pass, my time
sucked. i was running the stock 3.42 rearend it was still driveable
but when i would pull out from a red light the passenger side rear
would pop like one of the spider gears was striped. and i whined the
whole way home. i guess im lucky that i made it home. what kind of
rear end should i get for it that can take the torque? i got some damn
good pictures and i will try and post them as soon as i can. super chevy
weekend rocked

After I chipped my ring gear and butchered my Posi . I went with a Auburn Locker with GM Motive 3.73's. Plus I know what it feels like to kill a run from a bad Rear I went from a 12.897 to a 13.762 and wasn't too happy

Re: 94 Z28 rear end problems, and a weekend of hell.

i found out that my car had the hell ran out of it by the last owners teenage son. so there you go. it was probally ready to fly on me when i drove it down there to bristol. im kinda disapointed, i didnt get to see my times. there is straigh stretch up by my house that stretchs almost a mile. i hit 120 mph. possible high 11's or 12's.

Re: 94 Z28 rear end problems, and a weekend of hell.

a rebuilt Factory rear is still not very strong, no matter what posi you use. 7.5" is just too small of a ring gear and the spider gears are weak from the differential having to be so small. If you want something that you cannot break, get a Moser 9"..... I know that some break, but it is the strongest rear out there for our cars. the next choice IMO, would be the 8.8 conversion from www.ExtremeChassis.com it looks like a great setup and I know some mustangs making over 700HP at the wheels and cutting 1.20-1.30 lights on them, so they will handle the power. the 12 bolt are also stong, but i have seen a lot of probs with them in the last year or so.

Re: 94 Z28 rear end problems, and a weekend of hell.

ive put on a set of lt4 heads, intake, i bought the hot cam for the lt4, bolted on a 8 psi pro charger, with intercooler, oh and i did put in some power seal rings, bosh platenum 4's , still has stock coil.
also i done the port polishing to the heads. the tranny i had rebuilt, actually had a b&m shift kit
put in it. and a new driveshaft.

You can also get a 12 bolt rear end beefed up to fit your car.

Re: 94 Z28 rear end problems, and a weekend of hell.

I agree those rear ends are alot stronger than any 7.5 rear but will cost one arm and one leg. and require some fabrication as well. Also most Locker's don't use spider gears

Well if you decide to go with 3.42 - 3.73 Gears and hook well at near sea level. You should run mid to high 11's IMO
