Popping sound 2000 ford explorer xls

Can anyone tell me what is making a poping sound in my motor when accellerating up a hill. My Tranny fells like its jumpy but it doesnt feel like a slip during the popping sound. It kills my power and the noise can be really frequent or just not be there at all and the truck runs fine. I have it scheduled for an appointment at ford I would really like a head up on this problem before I go in. I have the extended power train warranty on the truck and who the hell knows what that covers. Most likely not whats wrong with my truck.

From what you've described it sounds like dieseling. It is also called run-on, because some engines, when shut off, will sit and continue to turn over several times before completely shutting off.

Maybe I didnt explain that It does this when i am driving it, usually up hill

Maybe I wasn't clear enough: Engines can diesel WHILE RUNNING, usually when there is a load placed on them. It makes a sound like knocking (maybe popping as you've described). Sometimes using a higher octane fuel will temporarily fix it. Try using premium for a tank.

Pemium Gas doesnt do anything for just bust my budget LOL. Anyways I am really starting to think that it has something to do with my timing chain. I have read something about Ford having problems with the timing chain tensioner on Explorers but they say that mine isnt covered under that recall because the 2000 was fixed. The other day I had to give it gas for it to start but then it was fine that happed 3 times and hasnt happened since. Truck sounded like crap driving this morning and drove like new coming home its like a hit or miss thing.

Well I finally got to talk to my mechanic about the problem it was nothing that anyone said on here. The popping sound that I was hearing was actually coming from the transfer case. See when I bought this Explorer used from a local ford dealership they sold it to me with two different type tires on it. Goodyear wranglers on the front which were brand new and some off brand tire on the back that were fairly new but worn. OK since this Explorer has auto 4 wheel drive in it and the tires on the back were 1/2 to 3/4 inch smaller than the front tires the back tires were turning faster than the front tires and the computer was thinking that the truck was spinning and was trying to engade the 4 wheel drive. So for now I just rotated the back with the front and totally eliminated the problem! I just hope from driving like this for 1 month didnt cause to much damage to my transfer case. My mechanic also said that uneven tire pressure can also cause this to happen in trucks with auto 4 wheel drive. He also said that if I kept driving it like this that I would eventually blow the transfer case and drop my drive shaft.

But thanks for your input at least I know what dieseling is now!

Oh how difficult it is to diagnose engine/vehicle sounds over the internet. I believe even click and clack would've been given a run for their money with this one.
