Dipstick length

I have a '65 with a 289 c.i.d. engine. My son drives it, and he says that the oil light comes on intermittently. I pulled the dipstick and the oil looked clean and at the proper level. However, when I put the stick back in the tube, it sounded like it was hitting the bottom of the oil pan and bending over before it ever was fully into the tube. Can anyone tell me the proper length for the dipstick for this car?
