Looks like a tire or suspension piece went on the car. This driver is well into the straight away, when he suddenly steers left.

Yeah I agree with Viper 10, that didn't look like driver error, it looked like mechanical failure.

Lude:

You never know with a crash how serious it is until the EMR people get the driver extricated from the car. That crash didn't look much worse than Dale Earnhardt's, and look what happened to him.

I have lost people that I knew to more mild looking track incidences.

I'm far from an expert on racing, so this is my novice observationing at work here... it looks like he might have just messed up the prior turn. You can't really tell what the track looks like before that hill, but at the beginning of the clip, not TOO far into the straightaway, he is already smoking his tires/brakes and swearving... Many times, from my experience, people will swerve back and forth a couple times before going completely out of control, especially with a high powered RWD car like that.

Who knows, just another perspective if anything. I hate seeing those cars go like that. :-(

The guy downshifted before the turn in and that caused the rear wheels to lock up, then after his back end started to come out he tried to counter steer it, but failed to do so. If he would have steered into the spin, he would have avoided the collision. He has no previous driving school experience, he was just a beginner with enough funds for him to aquire a Viper, which was his 2nd one. Everyone was okay, he got the car fixed immediately without issues. Sorry about reincarnate the post.

Re: Crash Video

I've watched the beginning of the video about 15 times in a row now. First off let me say it's sad to see any snake in a crash, especially what appears to be a gts-r, or a heavily modded gts. There is smoke hanging in the air behind the viper the whole entire time... even before the crash. it appears that there are a few possibilities. it's possible that there was a mechanical failure, but it looks to me like the driver was floating around the end of the corner, and was about to hit the straight so he downshifted and floored it and that's where the huge puff of smoke comes out. his tires burned and because of the huge amount of oversteer created by the smoking rear tires.. his rear end came around on him. p.s... is anyone else annoyed as all hell by omni freak? lol. he seems to like the smilies.

Well my uncle is the guy that runs the site that originally hosted the video. I even talked to the instructor that was in the car with the guy while I was on vacation. What I said above is exactly what I was told, and to my knowledge, it's all correct.

Regarding the clip in the first post of this thread, it happened during the 2000 Le Mans 24 Hours. Glasel, Brun and Seiler were the three drivers entered in that car, but I have no idea who was driving at the time of the crash.

Have to say I'm a bit confused though - some posts sound more like they describe the red viper wreck (as talked about elsewhere on the forum) at the end of the main straight at Phoenix. Has the video in the first post perhaps been replaced since the link was initially posted?

Looks like a mechanical failure.

Anyway, anyone know the name of this song? I love it!
