Fourth Generation Mustang....

Hey guy's I'm a 15 year old high school sophomore and I've got a couple questions. I originally wanted an early 70's dodge challenger, or plymouth cuda...but both of those cars are way to expensive. So I knew that Mustangs have always kind of been a "budget" muscle car, and since I dislike all of the first 3 generations, (except 60's fastbacks) I started looking into 94-04 Mustangs. So here are my questions.

-Difference between standard and GT, (I'm guessing these are the only 2 models that I will be able to find for under 7-8 thousand.

-How expensive will parts be? I.e. Dual exhaust, new hood, body kit maybe?

-What are some good 4th generation Mustang sites? Either sites that have a lot of information on them, or sites that sell parts.

you seem a little young to be worried about all sorts of mods to a car you dont' have... first off, you want a GT cuz that's got the V8... secondly i'd get a 94 or 95 cuz that has the 5.0 and therefore a better aftermarket. that and older car = less insurance $$.

as far as websites go, i'd just look at the ads in MM&FF (Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords) and similar magazines and check out the websites for the big ones. first mods should prolly be air filter/intake, gears, and exhaust. then a shifter/shift kit (manual/auto).

but worry about getting a car first... or more accurately getting your liscence =)

I have my permit haha. Ok so I just checked out this forum back until like page 5. One more question right now,

-My parents are super conservative so I'm going to try to get the best gas mileage I can out of it. I've already taken one year of autoshop, and I've been working on my uncles cars with him for years. So I know that the more air that goes into the engine, normally the better gas mileage you get. So where can I check out parts for better intake/exhaust etc?

-And.........any more tips on finding good deals, or deciding which model, or anything would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I want a manual for sure, I've driven my sisters 95(?) passat, that is manual, and my dads 2003 passat that is auto, and I definetly prefer the control of a manual, (and my dad agrees)

^^^ I'm going to be driving a 1995 passat w/ a v6, for the first year after I get my license. Then my parents agreed to help pay for a new car.

This isn't really that true of a statement. When more air goes into an engine more gas is needed to keep the air/fuel ratio. Only when you lean the a/f ratio out you get better milage, but this won't really apply to you because if you put on a k&n filter the airflow will increase, but the computer will automatically add more gas to compensate. The more power you make the lower the mpg you get.

What's wrong with starting out with a V8 car? My first car was a 67 mustang with a 300hp 302. It suited me just fine. Just because you didn't drive a V8 car for your first car doesn't mean other people shouldn't.

i had a 95 mustang when i turned 16 and when i turned 18 i bought a 97. i definately prefer the 97. if i were you i would look up parts online and see what your getting yourself into. my 95 had a lot of problems and i spent $5,000 in two years just to keep in running let a lone making it look good. i would definately go with a standard if your looking to save on gas. they go fast enough and dont use as much gas as a GT

i'll have to disagree...i've got a CAI and duals and my gas milage has improved by 3mpg in the city and 1.5 mpg highway. i've taken my gas milage many times, both before and after mods.

I also saw on a site that adding certain pulleys can give a slight increase in horse power, and an increase in gas mileage. Since this is going to be my everyday driver I need it to stay above 20 mpg. But I also want it to fly. hahaha. Mods I'm looking into right now are, exhaust, suspension (drop it a little), filter/intake, and hopefully a 2000 cobra r hood.

One question, this is probably going to make me look really stupid. StangNut said that 2 of my first mods should be gears, and a shifter kit. What are these?

when we say gears we mean the ring and pinion set that's in your rear differential. when you step up to a higher number, such as 3.73:1, your car will accelerate faster and do better burnouts, but the motor will spin faster at highway speed. it's a tradeoff that all the performance guys take.

a shift kit is a set of modifications you make to an automatic transmission to make it shift harder and faster. unfortuately it doesn't have the same effect on your GF =P. a shifter on a manual transmission makes the throws (how far you have to move the shifter between gears) shorter and crisper so it's harder to miss gears.

you also mentioned putting 'certain pullies' on to do some stuff... what' your'e referring to is underdrive pullies, which make your engine accessories spin slower, therefore relieving strain on the motor and increasing power a little. the downside to this is if you try to run a big stereo or such, you gotta install a high-output alternator, since the stock one won't make enough power at the lower rpms pullies give you.

gears aren't the best mpg upgrade, but they perform very well though. If you want good mpg a mustang may not be the best car for your daily driver. My 95 Cobra averaged 17mpg stock.

well unless his parents are just totally leaving him in the lurch as far as that goes, i'd say he's screwed no matter what he buys. unless he works two jobs and lives at home.
