99 Accord: brake light switch?

OK.. I've concluded that I need a new brake light switch.

Shift lock would not release, had to use key to release manually. Checked brake lights, both do not illuminate when brake pedal pressed. Checked bulbs, OK. Checked fuse, OK. Got pissed off, so came inside and searched online, found a few that had same problem, took back to Honda, turns out was brake light switch.

Anyways:
- anyone have any idea how much this part costs?
- can I fix it myself? If not, how much is this going to cost me?

Re: 99 Accord: brake light switch?

switch cost about US$30 at dealer.
if you were in USA you could order it from this place, but unfortunetly they don't ship to Canada.

switch is #4 on picture and in list.

Thanks.

Think the switch is likely the source of my problem?

Re: 99 Accord: brake light switch?

Quite possibly. But it might only be the plastic "button" that's pressed into the brake pedal, and that operates the switch.

Cheap & easy to replace (if you don't mind lying upside down under the dash).

Re: 99 Accord: brake light switch?

There really isn't much strain on the "button" - just the tension of the return spring on the brake pedal.

Re: 99 Accord: brake light switch?

Tension on return string is sufficient to press the button. Ordered a new switch, will plug that in to see if it resolves my problem.

Wink so helpful! how to install?

First of all, thanks for posting this, it prevented me taking my 86 accord in to the shop when the brake light wouldn't turn off. I found the broken plastic piece on the floor in the car and have ordered and picked up a new one (Pad, Pedal Stopper). Now, where does it go? I don't know anything about cars, but figure that I can do it instead of paying someone to fix it. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
