New trans or Fix old
i got a car for free because only reverse works in the transmission
is the transmision bad or is it the gear selector inside? and do i still have to drop the trans to fix the selector

Probably the transmission needs servicing.
However, check to see if the transmission is controlled by a vacuum hose and if there is a vacuum hose going to the transmission then make sure it is connected and not loose. Check the transmission fluid and make sure it is not very low and not burnt. If the transmission gear will go in to all gears then probably it is the transmission. Get a used tranny from a junkyard or have it repaired.
