(('95 WINDSTAR ignition problem?))

We bought a 95 Windstar LX back in March. It has a rebuilt engine, and so far it has been working great considering the bad reviews on this model. Anyways, I started noticing a problem with the key. If I didn't put it in the right way, it wouldn't start. If I flipped the key over, it would work, but today it just wouldn't start! I even took the key out and the radio stayed on as if the key were still inside! That scared me, because I wonder if something is broken. The engine usually starts fine, and it doesn't have a stalling problem, etc. The problem seems to have something to do with the key and the ignition. Please help if you have any clue as to why this happens.... Any of your would be greatly appreciated.

The ignition switch is out of adjustment, it is located under the dash on the top of the steering column at about the 1 o'clock position. It is actuated by a rod the runs from the ignition lock. If you place the ignition lock in in the "LOCK" position, and loosen the switch mount screws you can move it so that it is properly centered again. There is a small rectangular window on one side, that is pinned with the lock in the "lock" position to make sure it's properly adjusted, but it's hard to see on most vehicles, so I always go by feel. You can slide the switch upward and downward and "feel" where it's centered, then screw it back down. That *should* completely solve your problem, unless the lock mechanism is badly worn, in which case it need to be replaced.

How's this? On my 95, I can start it without the key unless the steering wheel is locked into place. I can also take the key out while it is still running! Is this the same problem?

What ModMech is saying is that the key (and key tumbler) are not the "switch".
The switch is an electrical black box located under the dash. The switch is connected to the key tumbler thru a linkage rod. The switch sometimes needs some mounting screw adjustment to sync it with the tumbler.
The switch may need to be replaced. Mine was replaced at about 100k miles.... and it should have been replaced sooner.
