blown engine x 2

after having a newer motor installed in my 1995 blazer because of the old one overheating, i was happy how the new one ran. got about 500 miles on it and decided i wanted to leave for the beach last night, so i left reading, pa and got about 200 miles south which put me in the fredericksburg, va area when i started to hear a loud knocking and i was even able to feel it in the floorboard. all the gauges were fine so i continued another 1/2 mile to the exit but no dice! as i was pulling off the car shut off and smoked erupted from the engine bay. not much you can do at midnight. the quantico, va exit that i had pulled off at luckily had a ramada in which i spent the night. my triple A+ membership allowed me 100 free miles towing this morning. i had to cover the rest which was $255. the salvage yard guaranteed this engine for 30 days and its been two weeks so they are going to replace it. i couldnt believe this would happen since my gauges were reading OK right up until the smoke. i understand the 30 day parts warranty from the yard, but i am definitely going after them for labor too, plus the towing bill, and even my nights stay at the hotel. im wondering if i should just buy a brand new engine.

Anyone know where I can get a rebuilt one for cheap? I've been looking around and the cheapest I found was around $1300 including core deposit. PLEASE HELP! I've been without my baby for about a month now!!

Well, lessee... I had a 95, engine blew catastrophically (flames and everything) so I put in a Mr Goodwrench crate motor. Mistake number one: I did not replace the distributor. ON its first long trip the distrbutor completely failed, causing major head damage (mushroomed valves) that Chevy fixed for me for free. AFter replacing the distributor and new heads I managed to drive 90 more miles for the bottom end went out. All of this because of a bad distributor.

I no longer own the vehicle. It is cursed.

Re: blown engine x 2

Too much focus on "CHEAP". There is alot of labor involved, and incidental costs for gaskets, hoses, plugs etc when you replace an engine. The installation time and cost of these extras will be the same if you are putting in a junker or a solid rebuilt engine.
If you can't come up with an extra few hundred $ now to do it right, then what will you do a few months down the road when your CHEAP junker needs to be replaced again?
Find a good automotive machine shop and level with them that you need to get this done as inexpensively as possible and ask them to work with you. Many of these shops are hungry for business because there are so many"crate motor" dealers around now. Even though the shop would rather do full price rebuilds, many of them will also recognize the opportunity to win a customer that will come back with other business for years to come.

You're probably wasting your time, this thread is almost a year old.

Why must people bring these old threads back to the top?
