Hydraulic clutch/Transmission "leak" at clutch face? Is there a "plug" there I lost?
I have a 2000 Ranger, L4 2.5ltr., 5spd. Std., 2wd, 2pass. work truck (no frills), approx. 26,000miles.I was "rocking" the truck to get out of a deep mud hole, shifting quickly between 1st&reverse,foot often slipping off clutch because of mud. I smelled something almost identical to burning brakes and saw some smoke but thought that was steam from water splashing against the hot engine.
I stopped and was pulled out by a friend. Then, I found my clutch went straight to the floor and would not allow me to go into gear. I chalked it up to an overheated clutch and let it sit, with no change. Then checked clutch fluid master cylinder--empty. Poured in new fluid and quickly got under truck to see if leaking.Right where I believe the clutch plate mates with the transmission (just behind or at the firewall) there was 2 1/2" long,1/4" wide "hole" that was clearly intended to be there because it was so precise.Unfortunately, there was a single, about 1/4" long screw with its end stuck in the hole that must have come from within the housing (because it was too big to come out through the "hole.")
All of the clutch fluid (specs. require use of standard brake fluid) was draining out through this hole. First, was there a "plug" that went into this obviously precisely cut hole, that I may have blown out or pulled out in trying "rock" the truck out of the mud and, second, the screw really worries me. Any ideas where it came from? Any help is greatly appreciated because its my only vehicle (though I intend to sell soon). :evillol
