Question EGR valve

Hello! I am new here, and own a '97 Avenger and the check engine light comes on, and then goes off, then comes back on. The idle is WAY low and I took it to Auto Zone to have that sensor checker thing determine what the problem was. It detected that my EGR valve is not responding. The guy there said for me to clean the EGR valve, and somewhat showed me where it was. I need help locating it and DETAILED instructions on how to clean it! LOL ALSO, could the EGR valve be causing my idle to be so low?

I own a 1999 Avenger V6 and my car had the same problem. At first my idle started acting up then it got worse to when it would die out coming to a stop. I replaced my EGR valve and problem went away.

Re: EGR valve

there should be NO recall. this is a comon problem and it happens on all cars. yes it will make it idle low. you can clean this part in about an hour with out to much trouble and it will work good, i know cause i have an avenger and i did it. i did it on my mustang too. the egr valve has a round black peice on the top of it. its right in the front of the engine bay, shouldnt be to hard to find, go to the ASEC website and they have a ton of posts about it. just buy some carburator cleaner for less than $3 and get some q-tips and clean out all the holes in the thing. i believe it bolts right onto the side of the engine
