Re: 02 Malibu Stalling Prob

How many miles on the car? Could be a lot of different things. If the car has high miles on it, might want to start with replacing the fuel filter if that hasn't been replaced since you got the car.

I have a similar problem

Our 98 Malibu has 110K miles and is stalling on a regular basis. We have had it in the garage about 4 times now and they haven't come up with a fix. Recently the check engine light has been coming on, sometimes staying on for a day or two then going out. Last week the mechanic said the engine codes indicated "rich at idle" "lean on accelarate." Supposedly they have "cleaned" some things. The plugs, air cleaner, fuel filter have all been changed and the throttle body cleaned. So far no other parts replaced that I know of. The only good news is I haven't been charged for any of this work since they can't find the problem. Any ideas???

This sounds like a fuel/air mangement problem, Maybe Mass air flow sensor, Intake air temperature sensor or MAP sensor. I also would check the Idle air control valve. It's either loosing spark or fuel, does it start right up after stalling? Has the car ever stalled while at speed or just at a stop or when first taking off?

Thanks wymi,

In answer to your questions. The car only stalls when decelerating to come to a stop, but not every time and never at speed. Always starts right up. Does not stall when accelerating. It seems to be getting worse, although we were speculating last night (as it stalled at everyother stop light) whether being low on feul makes a difference. I may look in my Chiltons to see how difficult it is to change some of these sensors, and I want to talk to the mechanic who has worked on it to see what he has "checked" and or "cleaned." Thanks for the suggestions.
