1996 Sable transmission hard shift from park to reverse or drive
When I shift from Park to Reverse or Park to Drive the transmission shifts hard into gear (like the rpm's are too high but the engine idles at 1100-1200 which I believe is normal for these tanks). Is there a sensor that controls the rpm's when shifting from park or is this a torque converter problem? When I shift from Park to 2 there is no hard shifting at all.

I would get your transmission rebuilt or a tune up.

Re: 1996 Sable transmission hard shift from park to reverse or drive
yea, i would have your trans looked at. i had my car towed one day, and when i went to pick it up, i could not get in to shift at all into reverse or out of park, then i yanked on the shifter and it finally gave, then one week later, i was driving and was coming to a stop, then when i went to press on the gas, nothing, the engine just reved up like in nuetral, it turns out that a few things went in my trans, and i hear that's the best thing that could happen to it, because u can get it rebuilt and that'll never happen again.

Finally figured it out. The RPM's were too high. I finally took it to a Ford shop and they determined the vacuum lines (the ones that go the the EGR etc) were all hooked up the wrong way. Once corrected the RPM's are normal and there no is more hard shifts from Park or Neutral to Reverse or Drive. I called the previous owner and he told me that the home mechanic who redid the rear headgasket must have hooked the vacuum lines up wrong when he reconnected everything. I'll say, they were totally screwed up. I'm surprised the car would even idle at all.
Anyway, all is well. |
