need help to make maximum power

i just bought a 97 gst with a big 16g, apexi fmic, 2 1/2 inch catback, 550 injectors, 190 lph fuel pump, act 2600 clutch, safc 2, boost guage, and air/fuel guage. right now it runs about a 13.1 and i was wondering if there was a way to get more power out of this thing with a limited budget. this is my first dsm, and ive never dealt with turbo before, so i really dont know how to do the fuel settings correctly. my car is running a little rich high throttle, and REALLY rich low throttle. i know im probably gonna need an egt guage, but other than that im pretty much clueless. oh and another thing, what would be the maximum safe boost to run with stock internals?

Re: need help to make maximum power

2 things come to mind when I read that mod list:

1) How are you controlling boost?
2) How are you holding boost?

You don't list a bov in your mods, and if you are running one that leaks you could lose major power there.

You also list no manual boost controller or ebc in your mods, so if you are not pushing enough boost here you are also not gaining nearly as much as you could be. It seems like you should be easily in the 12s with those mods, properly tuned. I don't know much about tuning 16gs, so I'll wait for Kevin or Import2nr or some of the other guys who have had or currently have that turbo to give you some advice.

EDIT>>Your exhaust is also only 2.5 in.--3 in. is recommended for 300+ hp applications, so at some point you should do this upgrade to get the most out of your mod list

Yes...it is necessary in order to tune your car to perform as well as possible once you reach a certain stage of mods. Otherwise you are not getting your money's worth out of the parts you have on your car!

Re: need help to make maximum power

I was just going to say... I dont see a logger in there. I'm going to assume the BOV has been upgraded and it has a Boost controller. IF thats the case, using a logger, you could add some race gas (116 octane range) and crank the boost up to 25 psi. Do it gradually, and watch timing to make sure you arent knocking, to be safe. But that is what to shoot for. There is plenty of info on that in other threads, and in the tuning guide at tuners (I think its up).

I also have to ask how you know its too rich. That AF gauge you have is useless for determing how rich you are at low throttle (closed loop, you would need a loggre to check your fuel trims), and at WOT/open loop it has a VERY narrow range. For example, anything between 10:1 and 12:1 shows up as .98 volts on the front O2 sensor... And thats what the AF guage reads. Just an FYI.

Sounds like you've got the start to a good car. Learn to tune that thing with the AFC using a logger of some sort, and add some race gas, I your mods should support passes in the 115 mph range. ET will be a little higher because of the FWD, but mid 12s should be doable with something close to decent driving.

Crap, just realized nothing has been done yet to prevent fuel cut. You cant run a chip or DSMlink without a 95 EPROM ECU... So run as much boost as you can while avoiding fuel cut. The 550 injectors are 18% bigger than stock, so you can run 18% more airflow before you hit it.

sorry forgot to add that. i do have a manual boost controller, and im running 19 psi right now. i dont know how much boost i could safely run daily driver, but ive seen a couple run 20 fine. if the a/f isnt accurate, then i should get a logger? how much would that run? would an egt guage be useful? is there anyway to at least do a decent tune on the afc without the logger? if so how, because i havent really gotten the hang of doing it yet. thanks a lot for any help

Re: need help to make maximum power

if you install it yourself and take it to a tune shop they can do it for you. depending on how nice they are.. they might charge you for it.

Re: need help to make maximum power

sorry if i sound like a big noob, but could anybody give me some SIMPLE instructions on how i could just walk outside right now, get in my car, and tune the afc2 to something close to decent with what i have? i just had to spend my last pay check on a new synchro for my del sol, so now i cant afford anything for a couple of weeks.

Re: need help to make maximum power

You can't really tune without a logger. www.pocketlogger.com sells them for $175. You'll need a compatible palm (check their compatibility page) also. Read the logger/S-AFC pages here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/foru...?s=&forumid=39. Just take it slow, you'll get it.

Re: need help to make maximum power

its not just a "walk out side and tune" type of thing!!! you need to have it on a dyno or have a datalogger of some sort... it takes time and patience
