So I installed the cold air intake on my 92 civic LX and its been running pretty smooth for the past couple of days. Ive been missing front passenger tire wheel well cover, so basically my filter has just been overexposed, I just ordered the cover and wouldnt you know it, a huge thunderstorm hits NYC, Im driving home like 20MPH so that the tire doesnt splash on the filter and then the inevitable happens, Huge deep puddle and Whaam , Hydro freaking shock, car stalls, Filter was wet as hell. I turn off the engine quick hit the hazards and waited a couple of minutes, Started the car again and rolled out slowly, parked the car and let it chill a bit, took me a hour to get home, when it usually takes me 15 minutes. Aint that something, Im hoping i didnt mess up my engine, What do ya think?

Re: HydroShock!
its called hydrolock, you might be lucky enough to not have anything happen to your motor. is it making any weird noises? do a compression test to see if you bent some valves or a rod then post the results up.

Re: HydroShock!
That happened to my friend a 2 weeks ago. thought he was hot shit and went through puddles forgeting about hydrolock. He got a good drink and the car bogged out. He let it sit overnight and everything seemed to be fine. long story short he ended up blowing two rods and destroying his engine. Now the 25 dollar bypass valve doesnt seem that expensive does it?

Re: HydroShock!
The motor shuts off to prevent internal damage. My friend's prelude did it once, it was fine the next day. You could take it to get a check-up if you're worried.

Re: HydroShock!
the car probably stalled because it didnt have any air coming through the intake. if you were going 20mph your engine probably wasnt sucking air too hard so there is no way it would of sucked too much water in there, if any at all. your combustion chamber can handle a little water, your injectors cant.

Anyways, was the puddle big enough that the filter was submerged, either partially or fully? Tat's where the By-pass valve makes a difference. If the filter just gets really soaked, etc...it doesn't do a thing, but when you go through the puddle and it's submergred at all, water gets sucked it, and the resulting pressure drop is what cuases the by-pass valve to work. Anyways, if you were only going 20 and shut it off ASAP, you might be alright. Hard to tell over the net, it really depends on how much water got in. The problemis when too much water gets in, everthing gets bent and breaks, since water doesn't compress like air. As they said, get a compression check, have the motor checked out. Does it make funny noises now, knocking, the sound of a thrown rod? I suggust getting it checked out, it's just too hard to tell what exactly happened to it over the net without being able to see it, etc. It could be okay, but then again, it could have problems now. It all depends on how much water actaully got in. |

Re: HydroShock!
Happened to me once, actually with the stock intake before I got my K&N. I was running away from a tornado in West Texas, drove thru a flood channel, and the rest is history.
Took it to the dealer the next day (it was still under warranty) and they ran a diagnostic, checked the chambers, and changed the oil. Never had another problem, and that was 100,000+ miles ago. So don't freak. Every case is different, but it might not be so bad.
