97 ext cab speaker box

I have a 97 Dodge Ram extended cab and I installed a new stereo about 6 months ago. Of course, you can't just go with a stereo, you've got to have the bass so I bought 2 subs in a box and an amplifier (as a set) off of a friend for 50 bucks. It works great and sounds good, the only problem is that the box is huge and it sits in back seat. 2 people can still sit back there fairly comfortably, but I hate that I have a huge box in my back seat. I've looked into speaker boxes that fit under the seat, but the companies that are selling them want upwards of 250 bucks. I was wondering if anyone has any plans or a design of a speaker box or if anyone has made one and could help me out. Thanks

I'd just make a box. Take measurements and make one yourself.

Re: 97 ext cab speaker box

I've taken measurements, but the problem is the the way that the floor is made. I don't know if you've ever seen the floor under the bench seat of a 97 ext cab, but it slopes from 3 inches from the floor to the seat down to 10 inches from the floor to the seat and the space available under the seat is 16 inches deep. Not only that, but right in the middle of the floor is a rectangular hump that takes off about an inch or 2 of the height (probably for the transmission under neath).

Re: 97 ext cab speaker box

That's why those custom-built boxes are 250 bucks like you said. I'd take a day and build a box myself, I don't care how difficult it is. I guess you just have to decide which is more practical and worthy, 250 bucks on a custom box or 25 bucks worth of lumber, some math and a piece of your time. But, good luck finding plans. Did you try Google yet? There must be something out there...

I agree, you gotta have that bass when you put a new deck in!

Re: 97 ext cab speaker box

If you have the right subs with the right amount of power, it doesn't matter if the acoustics are right because you shouldn't be able to hear anything anyways after a few seconds of playing something.

My buddy had an S truck, I think it was an S-10 or something, and it was an extended cab, the kind with the fold-out seats that come out of the sides. Well he filled that back part up with subs and amps, and if you put a beer bottle on top of the truck, it would bounce a good 4 inches off the top of the truck, until it worked its way off the edge of the roof. The back window of that truck ended up getting kicked out by the subs, and to this day I haven't seen a stereo system in a vehicle like that, it was retarded...

Re: 97 ext cab speaker box

The bad thing about what you're trying to do is that you don't have a quad cab, so you have to do all the work from the front, you can't be beside the situation. That's gotta suck man...

Yeah, like I always say, if it's loud enough, you shouldn't be worrying about acoustics. Good luck.

Re: 97 ext cab speaker box

It will cost about 30-50 for me to make something, not to mention the time and effort. But I got it figured out now. I'm not going to make anything, and if i come up with the 250 bucks, I'll buy a box (which will never happen because I will always find something better to spend 250 bucks on). So, what I'm going to do, is keep the giant box I have, and if I need to use the back seat, I've got an entire 8 foot of truck bed to put the speaker box in until the people are out of the back seat.
