Classy vs. Tacky

What goes through the mind of, say, an owner of a 1994 Tercel who decides to attach a loud muffler tip to their factory exhaust system. Or an owner of a 1995 Plymouth Neon with blue fluid nozzle spray LEDs, blue wiper blades, very exposing altezza lights, and a gaudy spoiler. Or lastly: an owner of a 1991 Toyota Corolla with 18 inch chrome rims (looking like polished sewer lids) and kiwi green paint with yet another gaudy spoiler, with leaving the rest of the car in factory condition.
Why do individuals choose to modify their cars with such untasteful extremes?

Is it...
Young drivers just now experiencing cars?
The drive for respect? creativity? to be unique?
The challenge of applying and installing these items/parts?
Lack of knowledge of the products being put onto or into their cars?
Bad taste?

I do understand the drive that enthusiasts have to make their cars faster, louder, flashier, more responsive, etc, but these have no logical point. Maybe I answered my own question earlier but I dunno..

Re: Classy vs. Tacky

Self expression, performance lust without the financial resources to back it properly, general poor taste. Whatever the reason, if it gets people interested in cars, if they enjoy what they do and don't endanger lives by acting stupid (a la Fast and Furious), then more power to them.

Re: Classy vs. Tacky

b/c they want to attract girls or people but don't have enough money to buy real cars. So they try to mod out their econobox to get attention and try to make people believe what it's not, a fast nice car. Instead it usually just becomes a slow piece of cheap ugly crap

They are primitive morons. In the animal kingdom bright colours are used to attract mates. They think it works for humans as well (it does for some)

Re: Classy vs. Tacky

Why do people buy a nice Victorian house and tack on some shitty addition that doesn't match?

Why do people buy Precious Moments collector plates and display them?

Why do people have hundreds of dolphin items in their bathrooms, and Winnie the Pooh items elsewhere?

Why do people name their children after drugs, or just badly misspelled names such as Urimena Knotta-Precious?

I have a feeling these are all the same people.

I agree, to each is to own. We should not really criticize any of people's automobile tastes. I'm just wondering sometimes "why!?"

Re: Classy vs. Tacky

Meh.

I think this topic has been covered elsewhere and all the questions asked and answered more eloquently than in this thread.

Why? Who the F*&K knows. You can't stop them, they give a shit what you think, so why waste time on such debates? Besides, my new "winnie the pooh and the dolphin" precious moments plates came it, so I have better things to do.
