2000 corolla ck engine light

My check engine light came on today after a rough idling start. The air filter was filthy, so I changed it but the light didn't go out. Since this is the first time I've ever had this indicator light come on, I am clueless- will I need to take it in to have the light "shut off"? The engine seems to be running smoothly- no noises. Any recommendations? (I have an extended warranty)

May I suggest that you take your car to a local AutoZone store and let them run a check engine light process on it...

It's free and It lets you know what is going on in the situation..

My check engine light was on almost constantly until I replaced the gas filler cap with a no name brand from WalMart. Haven't had the problem since. Hope it works!

my sisters 2001 corolla has the check engine light on, took it in to the dealer, they found a dirty air filter and said the mass air flow sensor needed to be replaced. I didn't do the repair, but replaced the air filter. The CEL is still on, but everything is running fine. I don't know if I should replace the air flow sensor or not, dealer wants $300...

If you feel you've solved the problem by replacing the air filter and just want to turn the check-engine light off do this:

Adjacent to the battery in the engine compartment there's a fuse box. Remove the 15amp EFI fuse for 10 seconds and then put it back. The light will go out, but you'll lose the error codes.

Make sure your gas cap is kept tight. The cap is marked with instructions to make sure you hear a clicking sound when turning. This assures that it is sealed... the cap then states that your light will come on if the cap is not tightly sealed.

Rough idle could also indicate bad spark plugs.

JMM..did you ever go to your local AutoZone and get that code read by an AutoZoner like I suggested??, If you didn't you need to so we can get your light problem taken care of.
Enough Speculation already quit hitting your head against that wall and get her checked out for FREE.

Angelo. he already says he has an extended warantee, but implies he does not want to waste time bringing the car to the dealer to have the light turned off since the car is now running smoothly. His extended dealer warantee would take care of the diagnosis and repair. So, why do you repeatedly insist that he follow your advice and bring the car to AZ? Do you do the marketing for them?

Extended warranty's usually do not have any thing to do with covering any kind of Diagnostic's on vehicles from any dealer's.
My contention is this..go to a AutoZone and have it done for FREE!!!
instead of PAYING!!! to have it done. Then after he finds out what is the engine light on for, then it's time to go pay the man to fix it.
Yes I market for AutoZone seeing as tho they are the only parts company out there who will do this FOR FREE!!! therefore I would say that instead of all the 2nd guessing, go to the people who will help him out FOR FREE!!!

Unplug the battery for 30 second, it should clear the check engine code but for those of you who have radio with security code might want to have the number handy cause it will clear also the code, if you have stock toyota radio should not be worry.

This forum is filled with people suggesting to use Pep-Boys, Auto-Zone, R&S etc. etc. This is not what this forum is about. It is about asking a question and responding to the question... not pumping commercial repair shops that charge $75/hour for repairs. You may be an experienced mechanic, but you offer no experiences. 'Experience' dictates that the light can be turned off by disconnecting the battery (but perhaps losing the radio pre-sets) or by removing/inserting the EFI fuse. 'Experience' dictates that the most common cause for the check-engine light is a loose gas cap. 'Experience' dictates that at 60k miles, Corollas are known to have O2 sensors go bad. Most people understand that a free diagnosis is just a way to get you into the store to spend money. It's a HOOK. Hooks are NOT free.

Here's my experience: my check-engine light came on (same 2000 Corolla) so I brought it to the dealer. He did NOT charge me. Was it free? Nothing is free. It cost me time... and time is valuable. Took off work, drove to dealer, waited, drove home. Gas cap was not put back tightly. Next time it happened I searched this forum and read about the EFI fuse from another poster's 'Experience'. Now, after I get a fill up I make sure the cap is tight. Problem solved

Is this the problem JMM is having? Maybe yes and maybe no. But he just wants to shut off the light. He replaced his air filter and the car is running smoothly. If the light comes on again THEN he may want to get the diagnostic codes read.

He just wants a quick fix so he can go off and get the light turned off. Autozone will run a code, but he doesnt care. He will when his shit starts missing and his car turnes into a piece of shit.

A year ago, my 2000 Corolla LE with a P0170 error code came out. Toyota Dealer said I ran out of gas and they just reset the light.

2 weeks ago, Engine Check Light came on again. Dealer checked O2 sensor B1, A1 causing error code P0171, Dealer replaced O2 sensor. Extra Care Proctection (ECP) covered.

July 14, 2004: Light back on, Toyota Dealer cleaned MAF sensor, check system and cleared code. Also ECP Covered.

After the Toyota service on July 14, my son took it to the highway for a spin and came home with the check engine light on again!!!!!! Do the dealer know what they are doing???? I don't think my problem has to do with tightening the gas cap (maybe faulty gas cap?), but I will definitely keep that in mind.

July 15, 2004: Toyota Dealer is ordering a new Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (located near the air filter intake) and gave me a courtesy car. Will see what happen next!

Without Extra Care Proctection (ECP), it will cost me a fortune. Even then, the time I spent is tremendous.

Other problems such as leaky water pump, remote door unlocking were also encountered. I think I have a lemon. On the bright side, after all the fixes, I will now have a better car. Keep my fingers crossed!

Guys! Thanks for the tips and tricks. I will make sure the gas cap is tightened after fueling. Does it mean if the battery is disconnected and reconnected, my remote entry key code will not work and has to be reset? Anybody knows?

usually sensors just dont go bad. O2 sensors though, are easy to take a shit on you, and are expensive. I think they design them to be a piece of junk
