Gas cap on tight and straight? If not fix and wait a few days (few cycles of starting) and see if it goes away

I just had mine done, 1995 Sunfire...replaced the EGR. Now no more light.

Re: check engine light will not go away

I bought my 2000 GT, and that light, as well as the ABS light, were on.

They took it to a dealership and got it fixed. I really don't know what the problem was, lol. Just let a mechanic run the diagnostics on it. Good luck.

Re: check engine light will not go away

Wanna fix the light, 2 ways to do it.
1- really small drill bit
2-electrical tape.
lol

Honestly though, mine came on in my 98. MAS crapped pants. Changed it and no more light.

auto zone will read the engine code for you for free and let you know what's wrong. fix that and your engine code should go away.

Engine Light...

Our 2000 Sunfire check engine light came on yesterday morning on the way to work, stayed on on the return trip home. Mechanic ran a diagnostic check, showed a "leak" somewhere, went straight to the gas cap, unscrewed it and screwed it back on tight, light went out when they started the car back up. Know the same thing happens on our Hyundai Elantra wagon too...

Can you tell me how much it cost you to get the EGR valve replaced?

We didn't mess with the EGR valve, just unscrewed the gas cap and screwed it back in...tighter! Took care of the light problem...Art

Re: check engine light will not go away

Mine was on on my 97 and I was really frustrated. Take it in to have it scanned (autozone will do this for free) mine was a 440 code which is for the evap emission system. What this means is there is a large leak in the system causing you to lose your vacuum. More times than not, the gas cap is faulty, but it can also be caused by a bad vacuum line or a faulty canister purge solenoid.

Re: check engine light will not go away

I just bought a 2001 Sunfire from a friend (dealer) who acquired it at an auction. The service light came on after we filled the tank 1/2 way (it was on fumes).......they ran the diagnostic tests 3 times and no code came up......another mechanic suggested we turn the key once but not start and hit the gas pedal 3 times really quickly.......it's supposedly a type of reset......anyway it worked........I then needed gas......light came on again.......did the gas pedal thing light went off.......I have a warranty and will be investigating this further but for the short term this has worked.

Re: check engine light will not go away

Try the gas cap first it's free.
Than I would unplug the ECM for 30 seconds to reset the codes in the computer. If the check engine light comes back on in say 30 seconds I would go to Autozone for a free scan test and you will know what's wrong. Then fix it.

it could be a o2 sensor...mine is gone behind the cat converter so im too lazy to fix it, i had the thing read at the dealership when it was in for maintenance...

the front one (the important one) went when the car was bought and was replaced for free
