(ABS) light on all the time

The truck runs fine but just yesterday running down the highway the amber ABS light ( the only one) came on and will always stay on. upon ignition start it comes on naturally then goes out for a second then comes back on and stays on....my pump is not running when I shut the truck off I have 54k miles....any ideas.

The EBCM has seen a problem with the ABS system and has set a code...to find out where the problem lies, you will need to have the codes pulled to determine what circuit or componant is at fault.
A regular code reader will not work, you will need to use a bi-directional scan tool to access the EBCM.

Re: (ABS) light on all the time

It just sucks...I just bought the truck 3 weeks ago. Now I have to spend the money to have a dealer tell me it's the ECBM...probably $100 to have me say stick it on the replacement cost, and then I do it myself sending it out to get it repaired for $100

It may not be the EBCM that is bad....when there is a fault, there is a code set. reading the code and decifering the information helps to determine the root cause of the problem..this is called diagnosis.
If you spend a lttle time and money on some diagnosis, you could save big bucks on repairs (by not installing parts that are not the problem)

I know your right, but it just kills me that I just bought it and just from reading these forms the odds are stacked against me....seems all I read is the EBCM going bad around 60k on Silverado's...hehe guess what mine has 54k. Hmm

Re: (ABS) light on all the time

there were a lot of problems with the EBCM's on the 1999 model Silverados, but those problems were associated with a constantly running abs motor, have seen a few wheel speed sensors go bad on the later models but no EBCM's, you need to take it in and get the codes checked, there's about a $200 difference between an speed sensor and a EBCM, thats well worth the check out expense

Re: (ABS) light on all the time

Some parts stores like Pep Boys will read your codes for free. Call around, be sure to tell them you need to decode an ABS problem.
