93 Lumina Won't Start

My girlfriend's car, a 93 Lumina Sedan with the 3.1 won't start. The car had been running fine until about two weeks ago it just shut off while turning a corner. There was no sputtering, missing, or other indication that there was a problem with the car. About two months ago, the Ignition Module and all three coils were replaced, and the car ran perfectly since then.

There are no codes--other than the "12" code, which I understand means nothing more than that the car is not running.

There is spark coming out of all of the coil packs, so I'm fairly certain that spark is not the problem. I hear the fuel pump "buzz" when I turn the key forward and I can smell plenty of gas under the hood when I try to start the car. The car cranks and cranks, but won't turn over. The spark plugs are not fouled. I'm curious if maybe there is an inline fuel filter somewhere near the throttle body that may be clogged? Also, I read that it may have something to do with the crank or cam position sensor...but since there are no codes, I'm not sure where to start as far as sensors go.

I plan to finally dig into the car this weekend, so quick replies will be appreciated. Thank You.

Chris

Chris I am a owner of a 93 Lumina, and A Auto tech. If you have SPARK, AND HAVE GOOD FUEL PSI AND HAVE PULSE REFERENCE at the INJECTORS Check fuel filter. it is located on the drivers side rear one side is a clip and the other is a 5/8 and a 11/16 6point line nut break them off and blow threw the out side. if you cannot get air threw it then it is blocked. Now if you have good flow threw the fuel you have to check something computer driven double check to see if your spark is uniform and not erratic. A cam sensor and crank would cut out one or both spark and fuel at the same time I have a 93 specific chevy lumina book hear i can ref for you. email me at kamakazih69@msn, com that way i can help you more

Re: 93 Lumina Won't Start

I have a code decipher book here, and it states code 12 means, "Diagnostic mode; no distributor signal to Electronic Control Module; System Pass". These are the exact words from the book. I believe what this means is that the code reader you used to obtain codes, will not allow the car to be started while connected. And I also believe that when this code is recieved, everything is functioning as it should, or at least the ECM thinks it is. As stated, replace the fuel filter, and the next thing I would try is the actual ECM itself. I had a 1990 lumina that just completly died once, and would on occasion start, and run good, and other times would act like running on 2 of its 4 cylinders, and then I replaced the ECM, and all was solved. I actually purchased a cheap code reader, that I used to help me diagnose problems, and it always gave me code 12, even when it would be running perfect after the new ECM was put in. Like I said, try the obvious, and when all else fails, don't sit and ponder, buy a new ECM, or at least a used working one. Good luck, and keep us informed.

Re: 93 Lumina Won't Start

Code 12 is the standard code read when there are no codes. It should always come up. As seen it my own experience and other threads, the coolant temp sensor can cause this problem. It is simple to check and cheap to replace.
Give it some thought.
